Why did the developers of Rip come up with the number 180 seconds for the hold-down timer?

Just a guess, It probably had to do with the speed of wan links when RIP was developed.CCNP: ROUTE B][COLOR=#ff0000]x[/COLOR][/B , SWITCH B][COLOR=#ff0000]x[/COLOR][/B, TSHOOT [X ] Completed on 2/18/2014 -
