Smart card and certs?

I'm reading Darril on the subject of smart cards. He states: "A certificate is embedded in the smart card. the cert holds a user's private key...".

My understanding is that the certificate binds my identity to my public key, not the private key.

Is there a disconnect or is my understanding incorrect? - Mike
