Hi,

Was just going through some test questions and came across a few questions that I literally just went blank on. One of them was the following -

Which one of the following addresses are private addresses, choose all that apply -

10.14.78.10
192.169.34.56
172.16.34.5
12.34.56.10

I couldnt figure it out at all icon_sad.gif

Any ideas on how to approach this?

Do you have a study guide??? It should be in there. Just memorize it...

Private network - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The answer is: 172.16.34.5 and 10.14.78.10

By "going blank" do you mean you do not understand the question, are you not sure what is meant by "private ip address" or you just aren't sure which of these addresses the question pertains to?

If all the above, I would pick up either an A+ or Network+ book and read it over.

Hmmm.... I'm using the Mike Meyers Passport guide. I've probably just missed it *sigh*

I went blank as in I couldnt figure out how to approach the question. For some reason I thought it was asking me to do some subnetting icon_redface.gif

Why did you not say the first one was a private IP address?

i would have said top three are private.

Yea ur right 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 is a private address range along with the other two the only one not is the fourth answer.

The best way to learn this is to understand the subnet masks used by the private ranges. That way you can work it out and get some subnet practice as well!

I thought the private address ranges were
    10.0.0.0 – 10.255.255.255
    172.16.0.0 – 172.31.255.255
    192.168.0.0 – 192.168.255.255

So the 192.169.34.56 is not private so it would be first and third

If I might make a suggestion, do not rely on the Passport books as your only study material as they give just a small overview. I would recommend the Exam Cram (A+ is good) along with Mike Myers full study guides.

    Just my 2 cents..

Well now, I think I am over with posting for today. I am too tired to answer questions correctly today... icon_lol.gif

    Good catch... icon_wink.gif

If it'd been the class B I would have missed it. I just memorized them when studying for the Net+. I did look it back up to make sure about the 192.168.x.x
Best way to memorize private addresses for me was to write them several times, I made flashcards. You'll need to know these everywhere throughout your IT studies. Kind of like the well known ports.
Best way to remember addresses is
    Class A 10.x.x.x
    Class B 172.16.x.x - 172.31.x.x (trick is 16-32 ALMOST ie 31.255.255 is almost 32)
    Class C 192.168.x.x

Simply know the start address and the mask and work out from there. Good subnet practice!
