notgoing2fail wrote: » Ok because I have and old 2900 XL switch. I'm not sure if it is Cat OS or IOS, and I'd rather not pull it out of the closet if I can't upgrade it. I guess it's worth checking out though.....

notgoing2fail wrote: » Ok it looks like I lucked out. My 2924XL is running version 12.0(5.2). So it's not 12.4 but that's ok, at least it's not 11.0.... I'm really having a hard time reading Cisco's naming convention. Here's the last 4 most recent images as of 2007.C2900XL LRE IOS IMAGE c2900xl-c3h2l9s-mz.120-5.WC17.binC2900XL LRE IOS IMAGE AND CMS FILES c2900xl-c3h2l9s-tar.120-5.WC17.tarC2900 IOS IMAGE c2900xl-c3h2s-mz.120-5.WC17.binC2900 IOS IMAGE AND CMS FILES c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC17.tar Which to download?

tiersten wrote: » You want C2900 IOS IMAGE AND CMS FILES aka c2900xl-c3h2s-tar.120-5.WC17.tar. You don't want the LRE version since you don't have a LRE switch. The CMS files are just the basic web GUI but doesn't hurt anything to have them in a lab. A 2900XL always comes with 12.0. You can't get anything older or newer than that. Switch IOS versions aren't the same as router IOS versions.
notgoing2fail wrote: » Since we're on the topic of switch, my 2924XL that I just turned on is pretty loud. My 2960 switch just hums, you can't even tell it's on. But the 2924? Noooo, it needs to sound like an airplane taking off..... Soooooo......any thoughts about opening this baby up and unplugging the fan? What do you guys think? Bad bad decision or it shouldn't really be that bad?
hermeszdata wrote: » Not recommended!!!! You may find that if the switch senses a fan faliure, it will not complete POST!!! Fans are on equipment for a reason ... COOLING! Without cooling the switch will overheat!
notgoing2fail wrote: » I never thought about that. I wonder if I can swap out the fans for whatever the 2960 is using. Because that baby hums!!
CiskHo wrote: » Search around for a fan upgrade kit. I think cablesandkits or ebay has had them. Not sure if they just replace OEM fans, if they are quieter fans, or what the deal is. Could be that your fans are just old and kind of warn out thus resulting in higher noise levels... I'm not sure as I have never used a 2900XL. May be worth cracking the case open and using Dust-Off to clean the fans if you have a can handy.
