TE slow

forkvoidforkvoid Member Posts: 317
Since I've been here, I've noticed that this forums sometimes slow to a screeching halt, with page loads even sometimes timing out. Has anyone else experienced this? I found it somewhat ironic that a forum dedicated to technology professionals has a slow web server. icon_lol.gif

I know the owner(which of you mods runs this place?) probably pays for most of it out of pocket, and I would more than happy than donate some money to go towards a server upgrade for increased performance.

I've never had an issue with speed on this site. Its been a lot better than most of the other forums I visit.

Weird. I've had slowness issues on three different connections... my home, my new work's line and my old work's line(a large university with an extremely big and underutilized pipe). Three different computers, too(two Windows, one OSX, Firefox and Safari).

For a few months last year it was nearly unbearable. The outlying links and top banners would load but the content was just blank for 2-3 minutes before finally loading in.

This year its been fairly peppy, though.

That would be icon_wm.gif (a.k.a WebMaster )

Drop him a PM when you're having an issue (if you can) or remember your local time (and server time if you can open the most recent thread) so he can check the logs. Hopefully it's something simple like you just happen to log in every time the server is getting backed up :D

Come on, we are engineers here. Send Webmaster traceroutes and ping/pathping results when you are having these issues so he can submit to his provider as well! :)

For the record. I have never had any problems, only when the site has had serious DOS type attacks.

If it is on our (host's) side it's unlikely our dedicated server. We've had our busiest month ever so it's possible we had some more peaks. I've had no comments/complaints and except for a day or two a couple of weeks ago it's always responding snappy for me. Things always slow down a bit during the summer so the growth isn't a reason for us to upgrade, yet. And I appreciate the idea of donating but we have loyal advertisers who cover that.

Just a random test:

Your speed test result:
s.gif
URL: www.techexams.net Measured speed : 1.38 sec s.gif

s.gif
Samples from our benchmarks, showing average speed (in sec) for the last 12 months:
google.com arin.net apple.com microsoft.com fedex.com usps.gov cnn.com weather.com
0.6 0.7 1.1 1.2 2.3 2.9 4.4 5.9

Almost as fast as Microsoft :)

If TE seems slow to you and it really seems to be on our end please send me a tracert result.

I would actually also endorse a donation function. Several other forums that I post on provide this opportunity and just put a little gold star under your username to indicate your contribution to the community. This place has given me so much that $10 here and there doesn't sound out of the question at all.

Thanks guys. Obviously any donation is appreciated. We do have a donate option, just tucked away a little at:
Support TechExams.net

And the text there still applies, it will be used directly towards new content, for a writer (which could very well be one of our mods or members) or perhaps software upgrades/enhancements to deliver new content/features, i.o.w. put back in TE. We'll have our 8th anniversary in a couple of months and then I'll hopefully be able to announce some new/updated features we will implement this summer. It will include something like the special edition we had for the Network+ TechNotes, which many people purchased even if they passed the exam already as a means of donating.

I have never had any problems, I live in the south part of the continent and here webpages around the world are not always fast, but this site is always fast.

But good idea, I think I *owe* TE a donation for all the advice, feedback and encouragement I've received from members over the last couple of years :D

As it's getting busier, we may need a bigger hampster on the wheel that drives this site. Maybe even a gerbil.

So far our four-core hamster needs little effort to keep up but if he gets close to becoming tired we'll surely take a look at gerbil-technology icon_lol.gif
