You should only have the clock rate set on one side of the PTP connection.

I'm going to reload both routers while you check the config
    Studying:
Working on CCNA: Security. Start date: 12.28.10
Microsoft 70-640 - on hold (This is not taking me anywhere. I started this in October, and it is December now, I am still on page 221. WTH!)
    Reading:
Network Warrior - Currently at Part II
Reading IPv6 Essentials 2nd Edition - on hold

Yes, when all else fails, reboot always seems to do the trick. LOL..

I checked the config and it looks fine...

I can't seem to spot any issues....

Yes, I have set the clock rate only on DCE side. I also tried different clock rates, but never go over 128000 because the NM-4A/S has 128000 max, but no luck.

Ok here's what I want, even if the info hasn't change... provide me the following info for each router...

    R4
    show controllers se1/1
    show int se1/1
    show run | include se1/1
    sh ip int bri

    R1
    show controllers se0/1
    show int se0/1
    show run | include se0/1
    sh ip int bri

Let's just start again with the exact info from this latest copy and paste....

BTW, we will then try PPP instead of HDLC afterwards. If PPP ends up working, we must figure out what the HDLC issue is....

Ok jump on your R4 and enter this in the serial interface mode.

    Here's what I did on R4:
    conf t
    int s1/1
    transmit-clock-internal
<--command does not exist on R4. The only options that I have is transmitter-delay and transmit-interface

ok nevermind it was a command just for kicks....ignore it...

Change your clock rate from 128000 to 64000.

64000 is what I used on my setup, so let's get your setup the same as mine.

Changed to 64000, and still down

    ok now I'm getting mad...

Jump on that R4 and set the keepalive to every 1 second. Let's see what this sucker does now instead of using the default 10 seconds..

let's keep it at 1 second. It won't hurt.

It takes awhile for the command to take effect. My port was down for a good 10-20 seconds then came back up....

    So check it again soon....

I know that the issue is somewhere around the clocking. It has to be, the DTE side is complaining about the clocking stopping.

You mentioned that it comes up at first and then goes down. So it tells me that initially it's actually working, then something is stopping the connection.

The clocking I believe is the concern....

What I would do is reverse the routers. Set the R4 to DTE side and make the R1 the clock source with DCE and see what happens...

    I have done that remember.
Also, don't forget that my other two 2620 have the same problem.

    Let me try a s0/0 on R1

Is it possible the NM-4A/S could be faulty?
  • Options
    thehourmanthehourman Member Posts: 723
    After the swapped, still down.

I am hoping it is not. I don't have any money to replace that; however, I am starting to believe it is.

The thing is why all the commands work on NM-4A/S, but just no connection.
like the show commands see the NM-4A/S, it can even detect what kind of cable I plug there.

Right, good questions, and let's hope that it's not a faulty module.

I've never experienced a faulty module before so I don't know what the behavior would be....

My guess is if it were faulty, it wouldn't even let you get this far, but that's just a guess....

The only thing I can think of is that we try PPP, and if that fails, then we would need someone else to come in and take a look at your configs...

    Another set of eyes...

So are you up for PPP?

Ok so for this it's pretty easy too.... let's go back to making the R4 the clock source.

You'll need to create username accounts on both routers. The username will be the hostnames of each router, it needs to be typed exactly as the name of the hostname, and make the password for both cisco.

    Ex:

username R1 password cisco <--this goes on R4

username R4 password cisco <-- this goes on R1

    Then in serial int mode:

    encapsulation ppp
    ppp authentication chap
    clock rate 64000

The R1 router I don't beleive really needs to be changed other than adding the username of the R4 router....

I executed the commands but no luck. I also tried to add the encapsulation ppp on R1, but still no luck either.

No, it took the command, but the line protocol is still down.
