If you take one of your working cables and plug it into 2 ports on the NM-4A/S and no shut both ports with no other configuration (except clock rate) and still can't see any cdp connections, it sounds like a bad NM-4A/S (since you verified HDLC works on a WIC card and the NM-4A/S didn't work in a different router with a different IOS).thehourman wrote: »notgoing2fail and I tried to do ppp last night, but did not work either. I have also tried to use all the clocks available on NM-4A/S and it is still nothing.
Here's a 3640 with an NM-4A/S in slot 3.....
Any existing configuration on the ports are removed....R3640-3#config t Enter configuration commands, one per line. End with CNTL/Z. R3640-3(config)#default interface serial 2/0 Building configuration... Interface Serial2/0 set to default configuration R3640-3(config)#default interface serial 2/1 Building configuration... Interface Serial2/1 set to default configuration R3640-3(config)#
Line shows up, protocol downR3640-3#show ip int brief Interface IP-Address OK? Method Status Protocol ... ... Serial2/0 unassigned YES TFTP up down Serial2/1 unassigned YES TFTP up down ...
Can't see any neighbors on the serial link....R3640-3#show cdp neigh Capability Codes: R - Router, T - Trans Bridge, B - Source Route Bridge S - Switch, H - Host, I - IGMP, r - Repeater Device ID Local Intrfce Holdtme Capability Platform Port ID S3550-1 Fas 0/0 130 R S I WS-C3550-4Fas 0/3 S3550-2 Fas 1/0 169 R S I WS-C3550-2Fas 0/3 S3750-1 Fas 3/0 125 R S I WS-C3750-2Fas 1/0/4
Let's set the clocking.... I didn't check which end is DCE, so I'll try clock rate on any interface until I find one that takes itR3640-3(config)#interface serial2/0 R3640-3(config-if)#clock rate 64000 %Error: This command applies only to DCE interfaces R3640-3(config)#interface serial 2/1 R3640-3(config-if)#clock rate 64000 R3640-3(config-if)#end
Give the serial interfaces some time to do their thing and let CDP do it's thing (about a minute or so....) and eventually you should see something like this (if your NM-4A/S is working).R3640-3#show cdp neighbor Capability Codes: R - Router, T - Trans Bridge, B - Source Route Bridge S - Switch, H - Host, I - IGMP, r - Repeater Device ID Local Intrfce Holdtme Capability Platform Port ID S3550-1 Fas 0/0 122 R S I WS-C3550-4Fas 0/3 R3640-3 Ser 2/0 77 R S I 3640 Ser 2/1 R3640-3 Ser 2/1 77 R S I 3640 Ser 2/0 S3550-2 Fas 1/0 162 R S I WS-C3550-2Fas 0/3 S3750-1 Fas 3/0 178 R S I WS-C3750-2Fas 1/0/4 R3640-3#
If the cable works between 2 WICs, but you can't get 2 ports on the NM-4A/S to see each other (only configuring the no shut & clock rate), then it's a NM-4A/S issue.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
Optionsthehourman Member Posts: 723I just made a new network. I attached the pic with this post.
All the WIC-1Ts are working. When I used the show cdp neighbors every devices show up.
Here no NM-4A/S, and everything is working just fine.
So is it 100% sure that my NM-4A/S is busted?
I mean the thing seems to be working, and it can detect what cable I plug to it. But it cannot hold the up up for a long time.
EDIT:
How do I fixed my terminal because the characters turned into weird ones?Studying:

You haven't provided enough information to rule out a Layer 8 issue.:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -

And since all the problems seem to occur when the NM-4A/S is involved -- and as far as I can tell you've never had a working connection from any port of the NM-4A/S -- did you ever do the "connect 2 ports on the NM-4A/S together" like I mentioned (and showed) in this post:

The serial port 1/0 on NM-4A/S that connects to R1's 0/1 the LEDs are "cn/lp, rxc, txc, the last one(no label)"
The two ports that I connected are the s1/2 and s1/3. Nothing came up with show cdp neighbors.
The LEDs on s1/2 are "cn/lp, txc" on s1/3 "cn/lp, rxc, txc"Studying:

What about that BIG one on the RIGHT that says EN? Or is that the one by the screw with no label (or hidden by the cable)? GREEN? AMBER?

Do you see any LEDs flash every 10 seconds (or whatever you have the keepalive interval configured for)?:mike: Cisco Certifications -- Collect the Entire Set! -
Optionsthehourman Member Posts: 723All the LEDs are color green.
The one I said no label I was talking about the EN.
All the LEDs I mentioned earlier are all solid color exept:
The LED on s1/0 TXD flashes every 10 secs.
On s1/2 the TXD flashes as well every 10 secs.
However, on s1/3 the only LEDs left on are cn/pl and txd.Studying:
