Cisco 7960 SIP Issues

I just got a used 7960 and it came with a SIP firmware. Right now I'm trying to get the back to SCCP (sticking with the basics for now) to work with my CME router. I've been reading through Cisco's Docs but this stuff is cryptic to me. I initially had to unlock the phone's configuration settings (not **#) but actually unlock config (option 9) under settings with a default password of cisco. Now that I'm in the configuration, I would just like to have this phone boot up, contact my tftp server and get its SCCP firmware, but it doesn't appear to be that easy. Any assistance is greatly appreciated... FYI... I have other 7960s working just fine with the tftp, dhcp, etc... your assistance is greatly appreciated.

Try a Factory Reset (if you haven't already);

With CME running, Unplug the phone,
Plug the phone back in,
When the Headset/Mute/Speaker buttons start cycling, Press and Hold '#'
Phone should display "Reset Sequence" or simular,
Enter 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 * 0 #
Press 2 to clear Network Config

The phone should now cycle and attempt to contact the TFTP server and update its firmware.

Azaghul,

I've tried the factory reset to no avail. That was one of the first things I tried... Thanks! Any other suggestions are welcomed.

Bump... no one has run into this problem or configured a phone for SIP and reverted to SCCP? C'mon TE...

Can someone at least help me thumb through the cryptic cisco docs that I put in the original post.

Which part do you find cryptic?

Maybe try a CME Doc: Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express System Administrator Guide - Installing and Upgrading Cisco Unified CME Software [Cisco Unified Communications Manager Express] - Cisco Systems

You have now deleted the SIP phone from CM ?

It appears that the upgrade from SIP to SCCP already assumes that you have the SIP files on the Option 150 / Option 66 server and the phones are configured. In my case, I do not have the SIP files in place. So commands like the no voice register pool does nothing to my config. I did give it a try just to see… but following the steps in the link didn’t help.

I guess my real question is… can I delete the firmware from the phone in any way? Or is there a way to wipe the firmware via the CME without having the original SIP files on the CME router? Thanks.. any additional suggestions are truly appreciated.

ok so where are you getting stuck is phone going through a boot cycle ? What error messages are you seeing?

Is the phone getting the XML file ?

The phone comes up... it looks for its vlan configuration, then states... "configuring ip" and it sits at that screen. The machine is getting an IP address (I am debugging from my dhcp server). But for some reason... it is stuck on the first screen with the cisco logo, UNIVERSAL APPLICATION LOADER across the top, and Configuring IP just continues to cycle in the bottom corner. I can hit the settings key to get to the settings, but after that... I can't make any changes. If I hit the **# to unlock the config settings and the phone does not react. Let me know if you need any further details. Again, thanks for your assistance.

Finally got it… Thanks to all that contributed. Your assistance is/was greatly appreciated!

I plugged the phone directly into the CME on fa0/0 with a crossover cable. That was the trick… after looking at this post on Trixbox.org, I followed the steps posted by “SteveW” & “ucteam” to get the phone back. I actually came across this post because I had other issues with my 7971. Once this worked for my 7971, I gave it a go on my 7960 that was running the SIP firmware. The upgrade took a few minutes, rebooted 3 or 4 times… but all in all, it WORKED!!

Again, thanks to those that provided me assistance!!!

I know... it was really weird because my other 7960 was able to get to the dhcp server and then to the tftp server. I even performed a factory reset on the phone that was working. I also tried putting the phone with the SIP firmware into the port of the 7960 that was working... all to no avail. Now that its fixed... I'm really glad that it happened... I will have that "fix action" engrained into my skull!
