Lab problem (MSPress)

I have been steadily making my way through the MSPress book, doing the labs with no problem thus far. Everything has been working smoothly. Until now...

Chapter 5-15 Practice 2: Verifying SRV Resource Records for Active Directory in DNS

Exercise 1: Installing Active Directory

Step 16 The DNS diagnostics page

When I get to this page, I receive an error:
Diagnostic Failed
The registration diagnostic has been run 1 time.

Warning: Domain Controller functions like joining a domain, logging onto a domain, and Active Directory replication will not be available until the DNS infrastructure for Active Directory is correctly configured.

The DNS zone authoritative for the domain domain1.local cannot be updated because it is the DNS root zone. Domain controllers will not send dynamic updates to the DNS root zone. If you want to use this domain name, select 'Install and configure the DNS server on this computer' below and create a delegation for the new DNS zone domain1.local from the root zone to this DNS server.

For more information, including steps to correct this problem, see Help.

Details
The primary DNS server tested was: a.root-servers.net (198.41.0.4)

The zone was: . (root)

Domain controllers will not send dynamic updates to the DNS root zone.
The book says nothing of this error. It simply says to click next.
There are 3 options here:
1) I have corrected the problem. Perform the DNS dianostic test again.

2) Install and configure the DNS server on this computer, and set this computer to use this DNS server as its preferred DNS server.

3) I will correct the problem later by configuring DNS manually. (Advanced)

Option 2 is the option defaulted to. I click next as the book states, go to the Permissions page and click next. Input password, click next. Finish and restart.

Now I go in to the DNS console and expand Computer1, Forward Lookup zones and domain1.local nodes. The book says there should be 6 subdoamins listed there. There is not. There are 2 records. (SOA and NS)

I attempt to join computer2 to the domain (System Properties->Computer Name->Change->Member Of) as the book says. I cannot.
I get an error - A domain Controller for the domain domain1.local could not be contacted.

Where have I gone wrong? What happened? I'm really kind of stuck here. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Where is your server pointing for DNS? Did you disconnect it from the internet?

The sub domains aren't listed because DNS is not configured properly.

The server is disconnected from the internet.
I haven't pointed the server anywhere. I don't recall any lab thus far that has asked me to do so.
Could this be a result of running these servers in VMWare and not having something configured properly there?

I removed the DNS role from the server.
I then added the Active Directory role and allowed it to add the DNS role.
The subdomains have been created. All seems well (knock on wood)
Must have been user error on my part when following the instructions from the book for adding the DNS role.

That or a special "test" from MS!
