Going for the CCNA!

ZZOmegaZZOmega Member Posts: 24 ■□□□□□□□□□
I'm scheduled to take the 640-802 in less than 10 hours! I don't know whether I'm excited or frightened to say the least, it's a weird feeling because I've never been in this kind of situation before(caring about my exam results). I haven't been studying the material for that long at all, in fact I began my studies less than 3 weeks ago icon_study.gif Of course, I'm not running into this blindly since I took the CCNA Exploration class about 2 years ago, but the exam topics have changed quite a bit since then. If I had to pinpoint my weaknesses, it would be pretty much all switch-related material(VTP, STP/PVST+/RSTP), and the specifics of wireless(DSSS/FHSS/OFDM, b/g data rates, a/n non-overlapping channels), and maybe some IPv6 icon_wink.gif

I just thought I'd let everybody know before posting a topic about how I did on it. Honestly I don't know if I'm ready, but I'm past the rescheduling window and I'm pretty curious to see how I do.

Luck to you. Have an apple and a peppermint both natural brain stimulants. Have the beverage of your choice after you slay it.

I forgot to check back on this thread before I went to take the CCNA, so I didn't eat a peppermint or an apple, but sure as heck got my beverage of choice after icon_wink.gif

You got it! I feel like I lost my life over the course of studying for the CCNA, so I might as well keep going icon_lol.gif

Does anybody have insight as to how Cisco's new three-exam track compares to their old four-exam path? I can't find nearly as much info on ROUTE/SWITCH/TSHOOT as I can on BSCI/BCMSN/ISCW/ONT. More specifically, should I hurry and try to test for the 4-path CCNP before it becomes history, or is the new condensed material pretty manageable?

EDIT: Actually, before I head straight into CCNP, should I go after CCNA SP/Wireless/Voice/Security first? If so, which path is recommended?

If you haven't even started studying for the 4 exam route go for the new exams. Sure there won't be as much exam specific resources out there yet but a lot of the old exam info applies anyways. Also when exams get retired so does old technology that is either seldom used anymore and or even supported in newer software revisions.

That question only you can answer. Pick one and knock it out, I chose Security but that's me.

i chose this path as well especially after just finishing the security+ which has a lot of crossover topics with the ccna security exam.

The 4 exam format will be going away soon and CCNP is much more indepth than CCNA so I'd start learning the new format if you're going that route. As for which CCNA concentration, well that depends where you want to go. They're starting off points for other tracks so like Security for example, you can't do CCSP without taking CCNA Security first. I believe this is also true of Voice. It takes some long term planning on your part to figure out where you want to be and in what aspect of networking.

The ROUTE and SWITCH are, from what I hear, nearly identical to the BSCI and BCMSN. So I would recommend going with the new tests.

Go with the new tests, it would be impossible to do the entire 4-TRACK before July 31. Take your time, go with ROUTE, SWITCH, TSHOOT. icon_thumright.gif

Thanks everybody! For the most part, I've figured out where I want to go from here. I want to do CCNA Security/Voice/Wireless, before I hit up the CCNP R&S track, but I also want to build upon my knowledge learned from the CCNA, so I don't lose some of the crap that's stuffed in my head.

I enjoy the CLI much more than I do the SDM, which I'm sure most, if not all of you, agree with me. Learning the nitty-gritty of why certain things are used, when they are applicable, how to use certain features to their full potential, etc. Using the SDM and clicking a few buttons just doesn't do it for me. I've dipped my feet into the CCNA Security track recently, and there's a pretty large part that's dedicated to setting up/installing/running the SDM. While I don't like it, I guess I have no choice icon_lol.gif

    The track I'm planning on going right now is;

CCNA -> Security -> Wireless -> Voice -> CCNP -> (Haven't thought this far yet)

That is, unless someone wants to place a bet that the 4-exam path, start-to-finish, cannot be completed before July 31st icon_wink.gif

Once again, thanks everyone for your support, help and opinions! I love this community and hope to be around more often!
