Picked one up for $10. I believe it to have CatOS on it because I don't recognize the cli when I boot it up.

What would the procedure be to upgrade to IOS?

Is this the right/latest IOS? c2940-i6k2l2q4-mz.121-22.EA13.bin

    You can't.

No. That is for a Catalyst 2940 which is a completely different switch.

You're lucky you only paid $10, lol. As explained above, it is a CatOS switch and it won't run IOS.

Some of the larger chassis based CatOS switches can be upgraded to native IOS or a hybris IOS/CatOS combination that runs on the various processors. The fixed configuration ones like this 2948G you can't.

Its still a pretty decent switch. It just isn't useful for certifications.

Crap. Duh, I knew that thing wasn't a 2940. I have one of those.

Are there any switches that can be upgraded from catOS? Why was under the impression that you could?

Pretty sure that's the idea. He's pointing out his earlier post about chassis switches being hybrid, and the ability to upgrade them to native.

We have some hybrid gear in our network. It's the devil.

How prevalent is CatOS out there? Is it worth learning at this point?

Speaking from experience, don't learn it until you have to. I'd never touched it before my current position. I'd never seen it at all. I don't think it is all that common in the real world outside of large enterprises who don't update their code/gear as they should.

Yeah, the only CatOS gear I touch is the ones in storage, none of it is in our production network.

Our storage/test room is like a Cisco museum, so much old rubbish that I wouldn't dream of working with.
