Droid Users - question

brad-brad- Member Posts: 1,218
I just got a Motorola Droid last night and so far its ok. The game selection pales to iTunes, and so do the prices. That is small potatoes though. What really butters my biscuits is that the phone contacts are your gmail contacts. I dont want to see everyone I've ever emailed as a f'n phone contact.

Is there an app or a way to segregate phone contacts from email contact? Would I have to make a seperate gmail account for just phone?

For apps, I started out with:
USA Today
NY Times
NFL News
Fandango
Dictionary.com

All suggestions welcome

Go into your gmail account and assign your contacts to groups. Once assigned to groups you can specify in the phone which group shows up for contacts.

More specifically; after assigning your contacts to groups in gmail. on your phone go into the Contacts list - press the menu button on the bottom - select Display Options - then click you gmail account and select only the groups you want visible.

I got myself a HTC Desire to replace my ended iPhone contract a couple of months ago. The phone itself is ok but the apps are nowhere near the quality of those on the iPhone. Still... time will tell if the Droid market will catch on to produce better ones.

As for Gmail contacts, there is an option on my phone to just use the phone for contacts or get them from Gmail - I presume there should be on yours too icon_confused.gif:

My biggest suggestion would be to root your phone to at least 2.1. I just did this (and installed froyo) and it is pretty awesome. Sticking with the default ROM isn't bad by any means, though.

Under accounts you can turn off contact syncing for your gmail account(s). If you are using an exchange mailbox you can decide to only sync contacts with that one under this settings>accounts menu. That's what I do. Despite keeping my gmail contacts managed on the website I prefer to keep my exchange account as my master list.

If you only have the gmail account then spending some quality time with the contacts module of the gmail/google voice site may be your best bet. There should be a folder called "my contacts" which is the actual folder that syncs with the phone. I don't know why google creates contacts for every email you send in your All Contacts folder. I wish that could be turned off.

For free apps I use dropbox, astrid tasks, and twitter. If you use google reader you can use Newsrob for free or buy it to get rid of the ads. I have bought many apps beyond this. I use Feedr for RSS, Xilalive for shoutcast radio, beautiful widgets for a home screen and weather integration with a live wallpaper, and nestoid for NES emulation. The is an app to connect a wii controller to the droid to play the NES games but I haven't tried that out yet.

You can also filter by contacts which have phone numbers included. That would cut out 99% of the junk you don't want to see.

Don't think its such a bad feature, you can use searching in just about every menu of the OS so even if you had 10,000 contacts, you could just search for the one you wanted and you'd get it. There's also a "favorites" or "most contacted" list which will probably be your primary source of dialing once you've had your phone for a little while.

Thats the best thing right there.

The market really does suck compared to itunes, but its still pretty good compared to everything else.

I'm curious at to what you guys are looking for to hate on the Android market. I have not come across a need that there wasn't an app for on the Android market. Historically everyone that has told me this has been unable to give me a reason, which I assume means they are just regurgitating something an Apple fanboy said on the internet or they just suck at finding what they want.

If you need more than the bubble level app you're way over using your phone.

I love my droid. I got rid of a blackberry to get one because my blackberry was slow as nails.
