Catalyst 2924-XL switch Error loading IOS image

fox1fox1 Member Posts: 4 ■□□□□□□□□□
I'm having a problem booting my Catalyst 2900 series WS-C2924-XL switch and tried to start it and it won't able to boot. Here is the switch output message (see below: msg 1) which keep showing Error loading "flash:c2900XL-h-mz-112.8-SA1" Then I accidentally fomated the flash files and lost the IOS images, html folder & config.text files.

Since I have similar IOS images for Catalyst 2900XL Series Switch and I used HyperTerminal XMODEM protocol to transfer and copy the IOS image into Flash memory. Then I tried to boot from the new IOS image & still won't able to boot and I keep getting same output message like this (see below:msg 2).

If someone has experianced similar situations or happens to know the solution to correct the above booting problem, please share your expertise or ideas with me.

thanks for your time and help.

    Hi fox1.

Check out the following url from cisco
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/switches/ps607/products_tech_note09186a0080094955.shtml

You need to initialise the flash, try entering the following commands:
    flash_init
    load_helper

    Then boot using:
    boot flash:<filename>

Thanks for your reply. But I tried executing those same cmds and I tried again and got the same error message

If you have anyother suggestions, I am willing to try it.

    Have you used the

unset Manual_Boot command. Maybe thats what the message means by environment variable no set correctly ?

Other that that you might just have to retry with the xmodem in case there was some corruption.
  • fox1fox1 Member Posts: 4 ■□□□□□□□□□
I haven't used the unset Manual_Boot command. But I did set to boot from current flash image and still won't work.

    switch: set boot flash:c2900XL-h-mz-112.8.3-SA3.bin

looking at the previous posted error message carefully, I noticed the release version of the boot loader.

    C2900XL Boot Loader (C2900-HBOOT-M) Version 11.2(icon_cool.gifSA1,

May be is the boot loader keeps looking for the same verion flash image to boot? If so, how can I change the boot loader to be compatiable with current flash image?
  • netheadnethead Member Posts: 43 ■■□□□□□□□□
Do you know how much memory the switch should have? Looking at your output below the flash seems to be about 1.7Mb but this should be either 2Mb or 4Mb so maybe their is a hardware problem here (as evidenced by the output with the first image).

There could be a problem with the memory which caused the buffer POST tests to fail.

That looks like a 4mb dram/2mb flash switch, so SA1 should run fine on it. You're doing all the proper steps..... My current job is in receiving and testing all incoming equipment for a major Cisco reseller, so I'm fairly proficient in playing with the equipment. Honestly, if I had to pin the problem on anything, I'd say your DRAM has gone bad. Your flash is taking the image, and at one point did decompress it and load it, and then died out.

Shoot me a PM with your email and I'll send you SA6 if you don't already have it. If it dies out as well, I'd lay good odds on your DRAM (or, possibly but probably less likely) your flash being bad.

Your boot helper could be kaput. Copy and paste your config.text to a text editor and add

    boot system flash:/c2900XL-h-mz-112.8.3-SA3.bin

Then xmodem the config back into your flash.

If this doesn't work, and judging from your post, you could have bad hardware.

Yeah, but when he specifies the image to boot directly, it's decompressing it and loading it, so the boot loader is probably fine. It's dying on the table buffers, so I'd bet dollars to donuts that if his memory isn't bad, the board is.
