    If you are talking strictly for Windows you may want to try:

    Ultimate Boot CD - Overview

    Otherwise a Knoppix live CD can do many of the things you're looking for (most on Windows machines too).

    "Not boot" as in, you cannot get the drive to power on with the box? or the drive is completely dead when you attempt to access the drive from a different machine/power source?

    You'll need to have power to that drive and be able to read files, but you can try DrWatson log file drwtsn32.log

    x:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\Dr Watson.

    (x = your shared drive)
    The computer name should be inside the log file
