Phone interview - do you send thank you letter?

Hey guys, I hope I don't get flamed for this question but do you still send a thank you letter after doing a phone interview?

When I have doubts as to whether a thank you letter is too formal, I'll sometimes just send a brief thank you email. I think either would be fine.
