I have a coworker who is interested in moving to New Zealand eventually. I was curious to see if anyone on here is from New Zealand and could tell me how IT jobs are looking over there?

Funny you should ask, I'm currently looking at that option, while my oz visa comes through.

Best bet is to look at seek and see what's going on. I've spoken with a couple of agents out there and while things have been tough same everywhere, things are improving. Most jobs are Auckland based given thats teh capital not really surprising. I have seen roles else where though so don't be put off by that.

Salaries are an interesting one, it's kinda hard for me to gauge, but looks like comparable roles are paying less than Uk however cost of living is cheaper supposedly.

if I say something that can be taken one of two ways and one of them offends, I usually mean the other one :-)

New zealand is an interesting country. You will take a hit in living standards without a doubt, people don't go there to get rich (dolalr conversion). Wellington and auckland are the two biggest for IT(ICT) jobs then christchurch. Alot of programmer jobs compared to anything else. Very hard to get hired without being onshore. The country is also based on who you know not what you know. Most of the companies are small businesses by our definition so the roles that are clearly defined here don't really exist to that degree there.

It's definately one of those places you feel like you've stepped back in time. Most importantly from the expats I know there you can't change the way they do business. They have a NZ way and that's how it will always be :)

I've only been to auckland for a few weeks on work and i can say it's a brilliant city in ways totally different to londn/new york, paris. People stop and talk, friendly great weather, sun shining until night hits then it's boring as hell if you're a 20 something.

I too have had an interest in Auckland/New Zealand. I would also appreciate any info provided by fellow memebers. I have looked into the visa process, conversion rates, and even looked at the job boards I was able to find online in my limited searching. Can anyone speak on the NZ opinion of Americans? Are Americans well recieved.....some countries view us as crazy, lazy, egotistical people.

New Zealand has a points system based off skillset, age, experience, education and certification, and family (in NZ), among others. This is assuming you wish to go there under the skilled migrant classification, which I think most people do. There are other ways to get there however.
