What are the average salaries for positions in the IT Security field? Positions like from Intrusion Analysts in a (SOC), Security Specialists, Penetration Testers, to Information Security Officers etc.

    When I worked in a SOC the pay was all over the place due to experience, education, certs, etc, etc.

    IT Security is one of the most difficult fields to be good at. Despite that there are few people who are really good in IT Security, just like other IT fields being current is paramount. Remember though being current in Security will affect the organization more than the average Network Administrator being current.

    Being trained in a wide variety of skills from networks to multiple OS versions is required for the security field. You also have to understand that security is more than just protecting assets, it is managing risk to keep a company profitable. Current security theories also improve organizational and IT optimization. Right now security jobs are some of the highest paid in the industry and growing.

    Despite all this it is a knock out drag out field that requires dedication and team work. If you are not passionate about it you will quickly burn out, instead of choosing a job by income, decide if you love doing it after getting your feet wet.
