WS-C3560-8PC-S vs. WS-C3560-24TS-S

filkenjitsufilkenjitsu Member Posts: 564 ■■■■□□□□□□
What am I going to miss going with the smaller model over the larger model other than port count?

Will the 8PC-S do everything the 24TS-2 does? If this is the case, I can get 2 of the 8 port models for the price of 1 of the 24 port ones.

WS-C3560-8PC-S
Port Qty 8
Data Transfer Rate 100 Mbps
Form Factor External
Power Over Ethernet (PoE) Yes

WS-C3560-24TS-S
24
100 Mbps
Form Factor External
Power Over Ethernet (PoE) ?

The 24 port models says it has the
    Standard multilayer image (SMI)
I can't see what image/feature set the 8 port model has.

Not sure if you can get by for the SWITCH exam with just the Standard (SMI) or IP Base image -- but for the CCIE you'd want the Enhanced (EMI) or IP Services image.

If you plan on using INE for the CCIE you will need the 24 port 3560.
  • filkenjitsufilkenjitsu Member Posts: 564 ■■■■□□□□□□
Could I just load the enhanced image on either the 24 port ot 8 port router? Or does the enhanced image only support certain hardware?

Why could I not use 2 of the 8 port switches with the enhanced image loaded for the ccie?

Looks like you can run a multilayer IOS on the little guy:

    IP SERVICES
    c3560-ipservicesk9-mz.122-53.SE2.bin
    Release Date: 27/Apr/2010
    Size: 12191.52 KB (12484113 bytes)
Minimum Memory: DRAM:128 MB Flash:16 MB

IP SERVICES W/O CRYPTO WITH WEB BASED DEV MGR
    c3560-ipservices-tar.122-53.SE2.tar
    Release Date: 27/Apr/2010
    Size: 14380.00 KB (14725120 bytes)
Minimum Memory: DRAM:128 MB Flash:16 MB

I don't see why you couldn't got with the 8 port model - Heck, I have the full 3750 IP Services IOS running on a 16-port NME!

A bunch of people do. You can get 1 or 2 of the 8 port 3560 switches for the 3650 features and a couple of 3550s for the greater port densities.

Another option is to use rack rental when you want to do the full practice labs without having to do "port gymnastics" to work around the lack of ports.

I thought Cisco was going to close the "software upgrade" loophole on the newer switches either with actual software keys or hardware -- but I'm not sure if or when it happened/happens.

They did for sure on the 3560 "E" and 3750 "E" models!

I have mine -- so I guess we can mention that you can run 2 of the 16 port $500 on eBay NMEs in a 3725 or 3745 and have 2 16 port 3750 switches for less than $1400. I think mine was $1100-1200, but I got a steal of a deal on a 3745.

Where have we posted about this recently -- in the CCVP or CCIE forums?

The important thing is to not get the 16 port ESW module confused with the 16 port ES module that runs the 3750 code. I think that cable modem thread diverged earlier when Colby mentioned his 16 port ESW module in his edge router (which is what I also started with before shifting to the ES modules).

I never noticed the W in the part number! I just assumed that it was the NME (3750) vs the NM (older)!

For anyone still following along in this thread, the "good one" that we're talking about that runs the 3750 code is the NME-16ES-1G-P

Remember it's BYOR -- bring your own router.

So I could order 2 NME-16ES-1G-P switches and install 3750 router IOS software on them and have 2 switches with all the capabilities of a 3750? Those things are expensive! Why is this procedure not talked about on every CCNP Lab thread? I have never heard anyone mention it before!

I am confused at what the NME-16ES-1G-P is? I only found the following on ebay:

    NEW Cisco NME-16ES-1G-P 16-port PoE 1-GE QTY Available - eBay (item 150472568907 end time Aug-25-10 22:00:27 PDT)

NME-16ES-1G-P 16-port EtherSwitch Service Module with PoE

for Cisco 2800/2900, 3700/3800 and 3900 Integrated Services Routers

So is the NME-16ES-1G-P just a module that you need to insert into another piece of hardware?

Correct - It needs to be installed in an NME slot in a compatible router.

Back to the original subject for a second, would I be able to install any 3650 image I wanted on the small 8 port switch? Use all 3650 capabilities?

You'll need a CCO login w/access to the IOS files but yes, the multilayer IP Services IOS is listed for the 8-port.

What would be the purpose of a 3750 over a 3650?

I think the only difference is the stackwise stuff. All 3560's are standalone switches.
  • pitviperpitviper Member Posts: 1,376 ■■■■■■■□□□
Yes, for a lab they are practically identical (you aren't tested on stacking capabilities anyways). Though the 3750s have a sweet looking silver front bezel :)

    Thanks for all the info!!

You guys have helped so much.

Another question, so how many 3560 level switches do I need for proper CCNP and CCIP studies?

I know I can get 3550s to use, but do I just need 1 3560 to get all the capabilities I need? Do I need 2?

    So would 3 3550s and 1 3560 work? or do I need 2 3550s and 2 3560s?

Do I need more than 4 switches for CCNP or CCIP?

Can't speak for the CCIP, but for the NP you should be good with 1 3560 (for PVANS and such) and 1 3550 as your L3 devices. I'm working with 5 switches (3750/NME-16ES, 2x 3560s, and 2x 2950s) total but you can probably get by with less - maybe 4 = 2x L2 and 2x L3.
