Tire pressure monitor systems could reveal driver location - Computerworld

I don't feel threatened by this, but I think it is quite interesting that it is possible. What do you guys think?

I think it's unlikely anyone, including our government, would ever "hack" our tire pressure sensors. But there is always the possibility that this could be misused in some way.

I think that tracking someone would be a little out there. As it was pointed out, each sensor is $1500 and you would likely want more than one. But I could easily see someone take advantage of this in order to break the device. People love to break stuff for no reason, especially if that person happens to be an ex-girlfriend or a difficult boss.

There might actually be a market for those trackers in state owned cars and such. To track when the cars come and go from the parking facility and inventory what cars are available at any given time.

There are already deployed systems that analyze traffic patterns by monitoring Bluetooth devices in vehicles. Seeing as Bluetooth is much more ubiquitous than wireless tire pressure monitors I don't see this going far.

I had not heard this before, but I think it is pretty cool. The key difference between what Illinois is doing and what these other guys did is that Illinois doesn't care who you are. They just want to know your speed. The other guys were more interested in being able to track you.

    Good read, thanks!
