Need some input

There is a position for management in IT that came up. I am a interested but the problem is that I work with a few others that have been here longer then myself. I feel like I would be walking over them since they have been here longer. I do not want to hurt my relationship with the others. The other situation is the one person who is interested in it does not hold the certifications and requirements they require. I want to talk to my IT Director about it but not sure how to approach him about it. Any suggestions?

It's feast or famine out there man, if you want to make it to the top you can't worry about the toes you're going to have to step on to get there.

Do what is best for you and your family, don't worry about anything else.

If management picks you for this management position it is because they thought you were the best candidate, don't feel guilty about that for a second.

What are doing still reading this??? Go get that management gig!!!

When you speak to your IT Director that is where you can voice your concerns about the others in your department. Don't let it hold you back, you've worked hard to get where you're at and for the chance to advance. Don't let others hold you back.
I was once in a similar position at a non-IT job and didn't apply for the supervisory role because others in my dept. had been there longer. Not only did I not get the job but got chewed out by my manager for not applying as he said they wanted me to be it. The guy that got it was a sometimes good worker who once he got the supervisory role just did enough to get by and was eventually fired. I had moved to a different dept by that time (kind of vertical move but more money)

Don't let others hold you back. Just go for it.

Jobs are competitive. You must compete with your friends to move forward with your career. Its not your fault your buddy does not have the required certs. Thats the beauty of the American system, hard work and dedication count for something.

If you feel you are qualified, there is no rule, unwritten or otherwise, that says you can't apply. The guy who comes after you isn't going to feel the same about it, because it's in our nature to stay hungry.

Apply for the position, and see where it goes. Think about the situation from the guy who comes (or came) after you. If this guy wants to move ahead, he's not going to put your concerns above his own, especially if he wants to get ahead. As long you do it without stabbing people in the back (and unfortunately, people are going to see it that way, but that's when I say "f(orget[or any other letters that can follow that one]) them."

You gotta do it and it's in YOUR best interest to do it. People are generally understanding of that.

Seriously, you have nothing to lose, and if your coworkers are professionals, they will be understanding. If they're not, then "f' 'em." ("forget" or any other f word you feel would be appropriate.

I'm in a similar situation. There are 2 contractors that started here in January or February. I started in april, and then 2 others started the week after me.

Today I've been told that the reqest for a new position has went through and was given a dollar amount. HR needs to post the position, but it doesn't matter because he wants me. He justifies himself with he needs to hire the person that would hurt him the most if they left. This isn't a union, time isn't everything. Right now that person is me. I feel bad about the other two (well one of them, the other person is dumber than a box of rocks), but I've worked hard to get where I am.

There is no way I would pass up a shot at this.

Edit: Go for it and let the best man win.

You're confused. The people you work with aren't your friends, they are your competition.

I'm not saying you should be a d*ck to people, but let's not lose sight of the big picture. Go for it.

I don't think you should voice your concerns about the other employees until you are offered the position. Just seems like it would make you sound weak.

Otherwise go for it and if you get it and people piss and moan about it then tough s@@t. Eventually they will get over it

I totally agree with this.

Just apply and treat applying to it like your coworkers aren't even there or that you're the only one applying for it.

Quick backstory that will shed some light on "friends" at work and why I agree with tpatt. Before I was promoted to my first fulltime job (as an IT jack-of-all-trades), I was friends with one of the guys who had been there for 11 years basically wasting his life away. We were friendly to each other and he pretty much saw that I not trying to be a career employee so he was never mean to me. All of a sudden, when I got promoted, he caused a stink with the union, because I was a part-timer. Even though the position was non-competitive, and I never sought nor wanted the promotion, the HR department (the head of which never liked me but that's a different story), made me jump through hoops to get the promotion. When I finally jumped through my unnecessary hoops, people who were not qualified to even turn a PC on started giving me a whole bunch of crap. To add bigger insult to injury, the guy had a twin brother who came in making 9 grand more than I did and did less work and knew less than I did. I got the last laugh though, as he and his brother got involved in some nasty business after I left. Don't know the specifics, but I know it wasn't good.

But long story short, you will always have haters. Just do what YOU have to do, and don't apologize for anything. Sounds mean, but you don't want to appear weak...especially for management. Because people who you thought were your friends are just looking to stab you in the back when you least expect it. Especially when they smile in front of you. Not saying you should stoop to that level, but don't be a sucker either. Defend yo'self. LOL

Okay spoke to my manager and voice my concern I did not step on anyone's foot and he said to me that the job is cut out for some and others it is not. He was glad to hear i am going to apply. They have 20 resumes for the position already. I asked him the procedure and will have all my paper work in tommorow for them.
