never2late Member Posts: 122I'm in the heart of it here and a lot of civilians are definitely worried. Their talking about 1000's of job losses and millions of dollars in lost revenue for the local cities when they close the local Joint Forces Command.
We've been somewhat insulated against the brunt of the recession due mainly to the high concentration of military bases and the government contractors. As some have mentioned, eventually the axe was going to fall. A few friends may be affected but this was just announced a week ago. We still have bases open that BRAC axed over 5 years ago so this won't happen too quickly. I mean, we are talking about the government here. -
Paul Boz Member Posts: 2,620 ■■■■■■■■□□I think its unfortunate that so many people are losing their jobs, but have to laugh at the ridiculous hypocrisy of the Virginia law makers who are slamming this. Everyone goes after the current administration for being too bloated, spending too much money we don't have, etc, but the second some budget cuts get announced people scream from the rafters. Of course you have to look out for your constituents, but its a little ridiculous. Our defense budget has been out of control since Reagan.CCNP | CCIP | CCDP | CCNA, CCDA

A couple of weeks ago, there was an article stating how much we are "under cyber attack all the time". Hell the leak of the war plans to wikileaks should at least show that there is some sort of problem. Maybe we should cut the pay of our Senators/Representives in half. That'll at least do something

If you think the ones we have now are bad, try getting ones that will work for half the pay.CCNP | CCIP | CCDP | CCNA, CCDA

I have seen this too...the government hand picking talent from contractors but it can be difficult to differentiate speculation from reality in this economy. The best insurance is a clearance + experience IMHO. -
powerfool Member Posts: 1,666 ■■■■■■■■□□They are dropping a joint command that is redundant... not like they are cutting out something essential, from what I read. Believe me, this would affect me directly, so I have been very interested in it. These people will likely move to fill other roles. There are plenty of retirements happening all the time...2024 Renew: [ ] AZ-204 [ ] AZ-305 [ ] AZ-400 [ ] AZ-500 [ ] Vault Assoc.

True. But those who would come out would be people who would truly want to do the job, not get paid and have nice benefits. -

Not here to start a war, but I'll give you some of my background. I have worked at SEVERAL of the 3 letter agencies. One of the jobs I wasn't even qualified for and got it just due to clearance. I put my time in and grinded my ass off, but several other people just sat there and got a paycheck(a very good paycheck). This is why I feel the spending has to come down. There is too much fluff all across the organizations. The contractor force can be cut 20 percent and it would still run. You just have to get rid of the fat. Am I worried? Of course, but I'm here on this site every day, learning and labbing and we have several who are just getting a paycheck. We can do with out them. Even if I were to loose my I could find somewhere else to go.Currently Reading
