Question in regard to cover letters, has anyone had the experience that cover letters are useful in getting an interview, or is it the resume that speaks for themselves.
Just pondering how much effort I should spend on cover letter vs resume writing.
Thanks in advance!

They allow you to sell yourself a bit more and do things like explain why you're interested in the position and why you think you would do well in such a role. There's not really a down-side to not having one; the worst that can happen is that they'll ignore it (unless you put something stupid it in).

Technito Member Posts: 152I agree, it definitely will allow you to sell yourself a bit more in addition to just a resume. Speaking for myself, cover letters have been a great value for as getting me interviews. Your resume is primarily just to show your work experience, education and skill-sets, versus your cover letter is introducing who you are, why you have interest in working for them, and why they should consider hiring you. And as competitive as the market is right now, sending a cover should be a must when applying for a job. Also do some research about the company and be sure to mention that in the cover letter. Most employers will appreciate that and highly consider you.Knowledge is being an Architect, no matter what field.....

mikedisd2 Member Posts: 1,096 ■■■■■□□□□□Put ample time into both your cover letter and resume. I've found that recruiters, etc. do read my letter and have made mention of some points that I included.
However, the last recruiter to call me obviously didn't read my cover letter as I had a really stupid mistake in it (mentioned another company's name, legacy of the last job I applied for). Ended up getting the job too. -
it_consultant Member Posts: 1,903I have gotten both interviews and jobs based on my cover letter. They can separate you from the pack, especially if you come off like a human instead of a nerdy geek.

snadam Member Posts: 2,234 ■■■■□□□□□□I find Cover letters (ESPECIALLY ones that are tailored to that particular job posting) to be extremely helpful. When last job searching I probably submitted >50 or so resumes/applications. I only sent 2 with cover letters. I was interviewed for both, offered both, and eventually accepted one. Call me superstitious, but it seemed to work well**** ARE FOR CHUMPS! Don't be a chump! Validate your material with certguard.com search engine

I always use one, within it highlighting my experience or qualifications for the job..Which can later be found on my resume.
