I am new to all this cert discussion... is there a certification that is more prestigious than the rest?
CCIE maybe?

It would be more of an opinion than anything else. A Microsoft person will say one thing, while a Cisco will say another. -
Turgon Banned Posts: 6,308 ■■■■■■■■■□CCIE is one of the top badges to have in terms of impact and impressing peers. Like any certification it has its detractors but generally it still has wow factor. There are other certifications in different disciplines that are seen as expert or elite. I recall the MCNE being one to have but Novell have retired that now. The MCA is up there but has never really taken off due in part to the expense. But it is exclusive. The predecessor to the MCNE was the ECNE. The Windows weenies wanted a Master MCSE for a while in response to the MCNE. There was a qualification called Master CNX I believe in networking but that has long since demised. 3Com did a 'Wizard' qualification, Nortel an Architect qualification.
I still think the CCIE is the one to get. Back in the day it had a blow away factor because there were few around and Cisco was a new thing for many organisations. We have many more now and the technologies are well bedded in so the expectations of CCIE's are higher. Back in 1999 you could get away with murder if you had that number. No longer. -

Guys who hold that certification and have good experience are in real demand (worldwide) and can demand very good renumeration in return. The question is subjective though - one mans meat is another mans poison etc.The trouble with quotes on the internet is that you can never tell if they are genuine - Abraham Lincoln -

I'll gladly buy anyone here that I meet in person a beer, or two, or even a meal. Just catch me when I'm in your town.
Thanks for the compliment. (and for the 50 or so PM's I'll get from people asking me how much ITIL Experts earn).
I agree with the general sentiment; whatever is the top cert is very subjective. Not only will it be different things for different people, it will be different things for different people at different points in their career.
For me at the moment, the next big step is to the CMC

He actually does this. Just don't make the mistake of assuming he'll recognize you from LinkedIn and go sit next to him at the bar and give him a quick smile. It really creeps him out -

I'll punch you in the mouth if I look up and see you sitting next to me again, and you'll strongly fight the urge to thank me.

That's where it gets a little iffy....usually the only people that know where I'll be are my wife, my business partner, and whomever the customer is.
I've seen some people on LinkedIn advertise their whereabouts, but that creeps me out because it seems really security-unconscious.
PM me your location and I will let you know if and when I am passing through.

In all seriousness, like everyone else said, it's very subjective. In my opinion and field, the top cert is probably the CCDE. You could say the Cisco Certified Architect is the top, but I don't think anyone has it yet, and it's kind of silly. So I'll say CCDE, though it's not a cert I see myself ever attempting. -

Right. That's what I do too. I don't advertise my current location via social media. This is why: I Can Stalk U - Raising awareness about inadvertent information sharing (the successor to Please Rob Me)

roflmao thought I was the only one who did that... My friends\family are starting to wise up to it now and almost stopped asking me what I'm doing in such n such a place.if I say something that can be taken one of two ways and one of them offends, I usually mean the other one :-) -

Brocade are getting a lot of business right now in terms of network refresh. Cheaper than Cisco
