sim vs real lab

I didn't have the money for real lab equipment so bought ciscopress ccna network simulator. Working on STP and VTP in a real lab how many switch's do you use. I guess 2 would work buty my sim's have 4 which is helping me understand it better. Your thoughts?

Typically, you'll find most depictions as 3 switches in a "triangular" drawing (each switch with a connection to the other switches). Having 4 switches only adds practice for you... so it can't be too bad!

You can also do 3 switches in a "line" for VTP - Server and Client mode switches with a Transparent mode switch between them.
