Dell R510 Server x2
Hey guys,
I'd like to get your thoughts on the following. Due to some management decisions, two of the brand-new, still in the box servers are going to be sold and not used. As a Non-Profit company, we purchased these from Dell about 30 days ago for $3,080 each. We're selling them for 60% of that cost or $1848/each so I quickly raised my hand and said I would buy them both. What would you do with these two servers? ***Note, retail on Dell's site puts these servers at $5700 each!

+1!
Worst case if you wanted to keep them you would have a great lab environment. Good time to play with vSphere and virtualize systems for testing/training. The downside will be when you get your power bill, especially if they are as power hungry as the HP DL 380 G4s I had running at the house.CCIE Sec: Starting Nov 11 -

Ummmm, give them to me?
Well you can't blame me for trying

genXrcist Member Posts: 531I agree, selling one to pay for the other makes the most sense to me. Since they both have 4x4GB of RAM I was thinking I'd take the RAM out of one and put it in the other. But that would dramatically drop the price of the other, not only because it wouldn't have RAM but it would then be an Open-Box item. Would be cool to have 32GB of RAM though.
I will definitely be labbing the heck out of Hyper-V & SCVMM. I'll also likely test ESXi. Oh and since I'll be doing CCNP next year Dynamips will be run as well.BroadcastStorm wrote: »Hi GenX I might be interested in purchasing one of those servers, I am hosting a web server at home hopefuly we can chat more...
Broadcast, I'll definitely be in touch with you as soon as I procure them. They should sell easily because Dell is WAY behind in production for that model at the moment. They had an unforecasted GIANT order come in and wipe out all stock of the chassis for this particular model.
Wow, I had no idea. This is good news for me! How did you find this out?1) CCNP Goal: by August 2012 -
earweed Member Posts: 5,192 ■■■■■■■■■□Yeah keeping both would probably be a bad idea as teh electric bill would take a huge hit. You can probaly just price some more RAM and buy it as you'll probably come out ahead since the no RAM in the box would drop the price more than the cost of purchasing it.
You just got yourself a really good lab comp there for cheap. Hopefully you'll find that it helps you out in the end.No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives. -

I had a few of that model on order and keep seeing the ship date slip further and further out. My rep told me. I canned the order and went with the R910's last week.“Government is a disease masquerading as its own cure.” -Robert LeFevre -
