this board seems to be a fan of those, I went to every bookstore around and I could find no books on MCDST anywhere.... so I just ordered the Sybex off of Amazon... it's one book instead of two, so it's less pages and less money... that and Sybex has gotten me through all 3 of my CompTIA certs... so I went with my gut and my wallet... but I would like to see those books... maybe I'll see if the library has one

First post here. I have been lurking for a bit.

I am hoping to take care of the following:

    CCENT
    CCNA

Then get a start on the MCITP.

Looks like CCNA is going to be my first of 2011. I was going to try to take it this week, but the holidays have seriously derailed my final week prep, and I'm just not motivated right now. I think getting back into a normal routine will help me get back on track, and I'll probably take it the 2nd week in January.

Then it's finish up MCSE (293,294 + 298, and maybe 299 for security spec), and get started on my work at WGU. I got my transcript evaluation the other day, and was pleased to find that my certs are knocking out the bulk of the IT course load, and I've got a bit of the basic college coursework done thanks to some credits from the AS I never finished. Really looking forward to being a college student again - with my mind actually focused on it this time!

    +1

The only one I know for sure is the experience.

I switch up so much it's not even funny. I can't begin to tell you how many half read books I have. MS DB 2008, MCDST, Linux+ etc LOL

I really don't know what I plan on. Right now the only IT app that I am really focusing in on is Excel. Other than that I am debating, debating, and more debating.

I'll be doing Enterprise Desktop Support Technician 7 and Enterprise Desktop Administrator 7.
  • TechnitoTechnito Member Posts: 152
    My plans are:

    MCTS: Windows 7
    MCTS: Windows Server 2008
    MCITP: SA and EA
    CCNA: Security

I've been considering VCP, but not sure yet at this point. Also gaining more experience and knowledge in network security is something I'm looking to accomplish as well.

I took and passed Sec+. It was my first certification test, and if it hadn't been for the job requirement, wouldn't have taken it. But it got me used to studying again, so I'd like to continue. First off I'll go for Linux+. Before starting Sec+ took a SkillSoft test and failed it. I studied to the point that I would score in the 80-90 range. I took SS for Linux and passed right off the bat, but I will continue to study to up the score. Depending how I do on Linux+, I'd like to get LPI 1,2, and3.

In the back of my mind, I'm also considering CISSP, since the next level up from where I am at would require it.

    My goals:
    LPI-1
70-640. Learn about AD and 2008
    Apple snow leopard basic exam.
    Start studying for sscp.
Considering starting wgu - masters in information assurance

I think it is good to have goals and road map. I usually find if I get one cert per year it s sufficient. Cost has to be considered too. For instance no way would I try to do sscp and cissp in one year. Just the exams alone are lots of money.

My goals for this wonderful year are to get my CCNA, work my way further into my Bachelors, and change career paths! I'm in desktop support now, but want to stick my thumb out and catch a ride on the wild networking side.

With CCNA, heck even CCENT you will have no problem. Good Luck!
    CISSP | GCIH | CEH | CNDA | LPT | ECSA | CCENT | MCTS | A+ | Net+ | Sec+

    Next Up: Linux+/RHCSA, GCIA

    That's great to hear!

It looks like with my degree, WGU is changing the format for the CCNA, changing the requirements into the two tests instead of just the one. So looks like I will be getting my CCENT first and then the CCNA. I think I like that path better coming from a background of little to no network experience.

I do some networking stuff at work, but it's mostly the physical layer (using a toner to trace from the jack to the switches, patching cables from patch panel to the switches, reset access points, etc...). I help the networking team (even though it's not my job, it's great experience) with the campus I cover as a Desktop Tech.

Sorry to go off topic... back on topic... I'm getting my CCNA!!!!

After reading various threads on MCSA/MCSE/MCITP, I've decided to go for MCSA and then drive on from there. Here's a rough draft of what I'm looking at, more likely tweak it if I read or hear more changes to M$ cert's.

    2010 - Comptia - All Done
    A+ (2009 Edition) - BR0-003
    Network+ 2009 - N10-004
    Security+ 2008 - SY0-201

    2011 - MCSA/CCNA/CCNP
    70-620 + CCNA = Currently Studying
    70-290
    70-291 + CCNP

    2011 - MCSE
    70-293
    70-294
    70-297 0r 70-298

    2011 - MCTS
    70-236

    2011/2012 - MCITP
    70-622
    70-640
    70-642
    70-646

    UPDATE:

Just added CCNA/CCNP and MCTS to the list.

So far my goals are as follows:

    2011

Q1: GCIH (Jan 4th) , GCIA (Sometime after GCIH)
    Q2: GPEN, CCNP Route
    Q3: GSEC, CCNP Switch
Q4: CCNP TSHOOT, Work on SANS Gold Paper

Goals might change depending on school workload as I am actively pursuing a M.S degree in Information Assurance and Security from Capella University.

How is Capella Univ compare to WGU? any reviews? why did you pick capella rather than WGU?

I want to know since im looking for a masters degree also.

I can't really speak for WGU since I am not familiar with it. I chose Capella mainly because the M.S Information Assurance and Security specialization was built around the domains of CISSP. In addition, Capella has also been designated a National Center of Academic Excellence in Information Assurance Education (CAEIAE) by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

I simply found the above very attractive back then when I was searching for the 'right' school to attend to.
