648/649 question

I am MCSA 2003, and have just bought this book.
I was expecting to see something along the lines of "This chapter applied to 649 candidates only", but haven't seen anything like this.
If everything in this book can come up in the 648 or 649 exam, then what is the difference between these two exams? Is 649 somehow more difficult 648?
Just struck me as strange.

TS: Upgrading from Windows Server 2003 MCSA to, Windows Server 2008, Technology Specializations
And it covers two of MCITP (640 and 642)
While 70-649 is for upgrading from MCSE to MCIP
TS: Upgrading Your MCSE on Windows Server 2003 to Windows Server 2008, Technology Specialist
And it covers three of MCITP (640,642 and 643)

steve_f Member Posts: 97 ■■□□□□□□□□Thanks. So there must be topics in the MS Press 648\649 book
MCTS Self-Paced Training Kit (Exams 70-648 and 70-649): Transitioning your MCSA/MCSE to Windows Server 2008 Technology Specialist
which I can skip since I am only going to sit the 648 exam. -

Well I don't see the point in skipping them because you never know what Microsoft will do so I'd better read them anyway. -

True, but if 648 covers the material for 2 exams, and 649 covers the material for 3 exams, there must be some stuff in that book that I can skip (for now)
I need to pass 648 to meet one of my objectives in work, hence the lack of interest in "649 only" material for now. -

Look at the skills measured tab. It will tell you what subjects to study. No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives. -
Gilarn Member Posts: 8 ■□□□□□□□□□just make sure you prepare especially for 640 and 642 as listed in the first or so page in the book. I recently studied the same way, upgrading from mcsa2003. of course i read the whole book (including 649 exam, which I didn't need). not that there isn't interesting information there but you are not being asked for that during 648 exam as in the other post on this forum I said they ask alot about ADFS, backups, certificates and ntds.dit
good luck. -

Thank you. I have read your post in more detail, and using the information you provided, it appears that I can skip the 643 material.
Much appreciated. Thanks -

samooli Member Posts: 33 ■■□□□□□□□□Hey All,
I just passed 70-649 exam and used the Microsoft Book 70-649 to pass. You dont need to read the other chapters in this joint book.
That said, you should read NPS and know all the ins and outs.
Good luck
