order to certs

im looking at taking the mcitp:se but im a little confused on the tests.

is it like comptia where there is an order (a+ then net+, then sec+) or would i be able to take each one with out a test before.

the order i was looking at doing is

70-680
70-646
70-640
70-642

or is there a better testing order?

I'm not much of a Microsoft junkie (yet) but the 646 is a PRO series exam and should be taken last (unless you have tons of prior work experience with Windows Server 2008 and now R2).

The natural progression for the MCITP:SA exams is 70-640, 70-642, 70-646. 680 can be done on the fly.

In the end its really up to you, what study materials you have, and how comfortable you are with the objectives.

Microsoft tests can be taken in whichever order you choose. Same with CompTIA. However most people go in order of difficulty.

Assuming you're shooting for MCITP:SA, I would go the following:

    70-680 - Client Exam
    70-640 - Active Directory
    70-642 - Network Infrastructure
    70-646 - MCITP: Server Admin
Currently Working On: 70-643 - Configuring Windows Server 2008 Applications Infrastructure

Plans for 2010: MCITP:EA and CCNA
    70-648 - Done
    70-643 - In progress
70-647 - Still on my list
70-680 - Still on my list

The 640 and 642 can be taken in either order. A lot of people on here, with AD experience, have taken the 642 first and recommend it in that order. The 680 can be taken at any time but the 646 should be taken after you've done both the 640 and 642.

Demon - I am going for the Enterprise Administrator certs now and started with AD cert (70-640) and am now on to 70-642. In my opinion learning Active Directory lays the groundwork for all of the rest of the exams as one way or another everything else is tied to Active Directory.

I started with 70-640 and if I had to do it again I would do it the same way. You will work with AD, DNS, and Certificates and all of them will be covered again in 70-642 as well as the other exams.

I took the 640 first and was glad I did. People who already have experience with AD either with Server 2003 or 2008 the order of the first 2 tests don't matter much.
I'm taking the 70-643 (again) next week and when it comes to reviewing for my test I've already started reading Mastering Server 2008 R2.

    I did this
    680
    642
    640
    646

And it went just fine or you can replace 642 with 640

Your mentor, and the course mentor, will probably recommend the order
    70-680
    70-640
    70-642
    70-646

But the 70-680 can be taken at any time in there and is not a pre-requisite for the MCITP:SA
