If you really want to do that you should become a Cop first (even if it's part-time or reserve) and then tackle the technical stuff...but like tiersten said...wrong forum for this topic,
Cisco was my first networking love, but my "other" router is a Mikrotik...

I moved the post to the Security Certifications forum under InfoSec and left a redirect for the CCNP forum post.

That's horrible advice. What does being a cop have to do with learning forensic procedures? Most cops don't do forensics. Its a specialized field that you have to train in once you have tenure on the force. Almost everyone starts police work on the beat then works into other departments (crime scene documentation, forensics, etc.

I think something like EnCE might be what you're looking for. We have one here that's an E-Discovery attorney.

You may also want to check out these guys. I took a course back in 2003, it was decent. They are more geared to teach computer forensics to law enforcement, but they do provide vendor neutral certifications.

The suggestion of being a cop first is a good one. You still have to deal with chain of custody and various other procedure prior to, during, and after collection. These are things law enforcement personnel would learn regardless of forensic based work is being done.

When our security person went to take EnCE training, 20 of 21 people were in law enforcement. I'll let you guess who wasn't. Just sayin...

As someone who was a CJ major and also grew up in a family of Cops, let me just say that being a Police Officer does teach you forensics. On the other hand, it does teach you how to handle being a court witness and how to handle evidence that you find on the scene of crime (Yes, I know some Cops to not handle evidence well).

Now I'm not saying that some departments might not hire you for a Forensics department. I'm just saying that getting into Law Enforcement does not promise you training for forensics. One method might be to get a degree in CS or Computer Forensics and then try to get hired onto a CSI team.

I am not saying that being a cop won't teach you valid forensic skills. I'm saying that the answer to "I want to get into forensics" shouldn't be "Just become a cop." There are many other alternatives to becoming adept at forensic analysis.
