In simple terms, the gateway of last resort works like the default gateway on a LAN, it just works at layer 3 instead of layer 2
A default gateway is used to get off a layer 2 network or LAN
The gateway of last resort or default route is used to get off a layer 3 network.
default gateway - configured on non-routing devices
default route - configured on routing devices
