Alot of jobs are requiring me to ask for a certain amount. What do you guys think I should put down/Im worth. This is the Cover letter and resume I'm submitting to jobs

To whom it may concern,

My name is Charles and I’m inquiring about the example position thats post on example.com. I am writing to you because I believe my training, experience, and proven ability will allow me to significantly contribute to your company's operations. I was HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) extensively trained at Connextions Inc. so that may put your privacy concerns at ease. I am looking for an opportunity starting in January. As It stands I have achieved my A+, Internet & Computing Core (IC3), MCP: Windows XP, MCTS: Network Infrastructure, and MCTS: Active Directory but by the beginning of January I will also have my MCITP (Microsoft Certified IT professional). My anticipated graduation is January ’11.

In reviewing the attached resume, you will note that I have acquired valuable experience in many facets of troubleshooting, installations, and maintenance for various desktop operations, servers, hardware, and software. I also have excellent oral communication skills in a high call volume environment working with several different trouble ticketing systems such as Remedy (TTS), Ebox and several data systems like ACSR, CableData, including medical systems such as RxClaims, and ReCap.

I am an individual that can multi-task, enjoys a challenge, and can continually stay abreast of the latest advancements in the IT field. If you are seeking a professional who has excellent people and problem solving skills and can easily provide optimum support to your operations, then please consider what I have to offer. I believe it would be mutually beneficial for us to meet and discuss the goals of your company and how my technical abilities can help you achieve those goals. Hopefully we can meet in the near future to discuss your company’s needs. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Sincerely,
Charles

Depends on the job and the location. Lately I've only been applying to jobs that list the pay range as I don't have time to play games and hope the money is what I'm looking for.

Well, what pay range do you want that is realistic for your experience and value?

I cant say how much you are worth since I dont know how much you guys are paid in the US. But with regards the resume may I take the liberty of saying you should beef up the individual bullet points for each of your roles. Take away the first 5-6 things you have at the top of the resume and incorporate into the experience itself.

It will make your resume look better and meaner. You want to highlight what you have done and what you can bring to the new company, and not what you expect to happen.

The only thing in the Profile/Objective section should be >>

Anything else in there and it's fluff to me, just extra padding. Take it with a grain of salt, but this is what I have heard from a couple of hiring managers and it makes sense.

really what I'm trying to ask for is How much can I realistically be asking for.

    My (unsolicited) thoughts:

Not to be nit-picky, but I would reword this sentence:

"I was HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability Act) extensively trained at Connextions Inc. so that may put your privacy concerns at ease."

For example, read it with the parenthesis removed: "I was HIPAA extensively trained at Connextions Inc. so that may put your privacy concerns at ease."

Something like, 'I have received extensive HIPAA training at Connextions Inc...' (I feel that perfect grammar is imperative for cover letters, JMO.)

'Furthermore I possess a unique talent for delivering highly complex technical information into terms and concepts that the end users can readily grasp.'

Remove the 'furthermore I' - it doesn't fit the format of the other bullets.

 'I am bilingual which entails being fluent in both English and Spanish.'
Definitely change this - most people know what bilingual is. ;)

Maybe something like 'Bilingual - fluent in English/Spanish... and I would also add that in the first sentence of your cover letter, that is an excellent asset.

As for salary expectations, it very much depends on the job, location, and even the industry, so it's hard to give a range that would be useful.

I agree with the others. It's not realistic for someone to look at your resume and say "this guy needs to be paid this much!" Cost of living, the type of business you apply for and the comparisons of similar positions is impossible for anyone here to calculate appropriately.

There is only one correct answer to this question.

Interviewer: What kind of salary are you expecting?

You: As an employee, my primary focus would be the continued success of the business. I expect fair compensation based on the value you believe I can add to your organization.

This is the Dale Carnegie school of thought, and it works rather well.

Thats like answering the greatest weakness question with "I work too hard." Everyone knows its just a line of crap. Just ask for what you want to make.

I think you are heading straight to helpdesk with this CV. Is that what you want to do? I would be bring to the top all the things you can actually do and have done in the field that go outside responding to tickets. Have you upgraded anything? Have you installed anything significant? Have you migrated anything? Have you handled any small but significant projects? Have you documented anything? What improvements have you lead or delivered end to end in terms of backups, security, connectivity, application rollout. If you had any supervisory or budgetary experience however menial stick it in. Did you have a role that required you to review or approve the work of others? Where you ever consulted for technical options or advice on what to buy? Have you done any greenfield installations? Have you worked with remote IT staff and coordinated things? Have you dealt with suppliers or third party contractors. Do you give presentations, do you attend meetings?
