2600xm password reset not working, wont ignore startup-config

mark076hmark076h Member Posts: 154
Hey everyone, cisco noob trouble here.

I am trying to reset the configuration of a 2650xm router I got on ebay. I am following the password recovery instruction from CISCO but it is not working.

I am doing the break sequence to get into rommon then doing the confreg 0x2142 and reset commands.

However, when it restarts it is not bypassing the startup config like it should. What could cause? I am stumped.......

any help would be highly appreciated.

You didn't tell us the password recovery link you used or paste the output of your terminal session so we could see what you did -- so it's hard to guess why it isn't working for you.

Did you compare your output to the example password recovery terminal output and look for where it's different?

If the no service password-recovery option was set you wouldn't be able to see the current configuration, but you'd still be able to nuke it and get to the router setup option.

What happens when you type in no as the example shows?

You may not get the option if your terminal configuration is off. You've got a couple of character skips in your terminal session output so you may be sending some "input" you shouldn't. That's why I asked about your terminal settings -- what did you configure for flow control?

What's the output for the yes option -- it should start asking you about the configuration you want, rather than the terminate autoinstall question.

NONE sounds like a Parity option. Flow control is usually CTS/RTS or XON/XOFF or DTR/DSR

    You may have bad NVRAM.

    Try the erase NVRAM: command

And then see if you have the squeeze NVRAM: command

If the router does have bad NVRAM and you can't return it, you can try to boot by getting the configuration from the network with the service config command (after setting an option or two with the boot command).

It may be case sensitive -- see what the command line help says and try that. It may be erase nvram: rather than erase NVRAM:

You can try a Hail Mary IOS upgrade on the off chance that the issue is caused by a corrupted IOS image trying to write to the wrong memory location.

Otherwise check out this thread: http://www.techexams.net/forums/ccna-ccent/50540-fried-nvram.html

That's good news. If none of the normal NVRAM recovery steps worked, than that would mean trying a different known good IOS image might have a chance of solving the problem (rather than being a long shot).

I have 128MB DRAM and 32MB FLASH I was going to upgrade on this router. I will go ahead and do this and see if new IOS fixes the problem.

What step should i do for this? I will need to use the tftpdnld command from rommon correct?

just follow this guide? How to Download a Software Image to a Cisco 2600 via TFTP Using the tftpdnld ROMMON Command - Cisco Systems

xmodem is if you don't have a tftp server and want to directly connect to the router?

this is where I am at.

    write erase works
    memory test works

copy run start does not work
    show startup-config does not work
