Legal OS trial versions

Is there anyway to get a trial version of Windows 7 legally? I seen a post today which someone had a link to Virtualbox and I want to play around with both.

While I'm at it I am going to get my hands dirty with Linux. Any recommendations on which Linux distro to start out with for a noob and helpful books to read?
