Are their any other certifications that dont expire ?

Are their any other certifications out there from other companies that dont expire ?

I passed the network + and security + but i dont have the hands on experience, any advice ?

Certifications earned from Offensive Security, i.e. OSWP, OSCP, OSCE do not require re-certification as far as I'm aware (prepared to be corrected).

Also other CompTIA certs are 'for life' that is Project+, Linux+ (LPI), and Server+ to name a few. I am not sure I totally agree with certs that don't require renewal and it does not require you to stay up to date with the content.

The Offensive Security certs are extremely hard to earn, and with those I guess they deserve the title of 'for life', and I have immense respect for any of those that obtain these certifications due to the level of knowledge that is required, equivalent to those who hold a CCIE etc.

Just my 2c.

I was you just 4 years ago so I'll help you out the best I can.

What's your main concern with expiration of certs? They expire because some people get the "take them and forget them" certs and don't ever use them or keep up on current technologies/threats. CompTIA will put a stop to this 01JAN2011 because they've recognized it also.

To answer your question, there's a slew of Microsoft certs that only expire when they cease mainstream support of their application(s). What I mean by this is, MCSE is only for MS Server 2003 not for 2008. Once MS stops supporting 2003 MCSE is dead. MCSE for NT/2000 died years ago. Server 2008 certs are MCITP. So if you're into MS stuff you can take the MCSE, MCSA, MCP, MCTS, MCITP and more. There's multiple uses and flavors of each cert so you'll have to track down what you want. What is your path in IT? Your IT career path; Security? Networking? Systems? Databases? Software Development? There's tons of paths and certs for all of them. You shouldn't let an expiration date keep you away from things like Cisco either. CCNA, CCNP, CCVP, CCIE are in demand my friend.

@cisco_nerd: I`m glad i read this thread. I have never heard of Offensive security until now. i just watched one of there videos, impressive. I will check them out further.

@hustlin_moe20: Hilarious avatar. You basically said what i would have said. so i`ll just add by saying i wouldn't worry too much about certs that expire.

@Magus1: It may seem like a hassle when you are looking at it from the beginner perspective but it will ultimately benefit you down the road, It kind of forces you to be current and up to date in which ever field your in. I can only imagine what it would feel like if you obtain a number of certs and then let them expire. Only to find your current or future employer needs them ALL to be current or you cant move forward. Think of the mad dash you would be doing in that scenario.

I was in the same boat as you with Cisco certs. But i've decided it would be worth it to get my ccna/ccnp/ccie even if i had to re-certify. How hard can the test be when you work with the hardware everyday? Plus, the money you`ll make with obtaining those certs should cover re-certification cost.(If that was a factor)

The CWTS (Certified Wireless Technology Specialist) certification is a lifetime cert.

They are quite in depth courses, and they host courses online with content that you access through VPN to there labs, and the exam challenge is a 24 hour event. They are not easy to earn though, but if security is your goal (like mine) then they are one of the more advanced certs to get.

I see that. I love the idea that your lab assignment is to hack into a computer or a network of computers. After i enroll in WGU for the BS: IT-Security. I might look into those certs. I don't know if it'll be before or after getting the masters in IT Security from WGU as well.

I just realized i replied to one of your postings telling you to check out offensive security lol.

Thanks for the wealth of information, paying for the last 4 exams(A+ Network+ Security+) burned a major hole in my pocket, as I am looking for stable work. I am interested in getting in to the security side of things, I heard that those who posses these skills are in high demand (Let me know if I am mistaken). My plan for next year is to start with CWTS, then move on to CCENT and CCNA.

Wait a minute as I am typing this and watching Star Trek TNG on the Syfy channel, I just realized that it is christmas. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE ! ! ! or HAPPY HOLIDAY ! ! ! Which ever you perfer.

You're correct. InfoSec is in high demand for sure. U.S. CYBERCOM is making an even bigger deal of securtiy now also. If you want a steady, progressive, every-changing career, InfoSec is the way to go.
