    April 2012? And you started this topic 6 months ago? On the bright side you got plenty of notice and your severance buys you more time as well.

    Yeah, I am looking on the bright side. Just a little afraid that I will not find a job in this economy.

    Compared to what could have happened, I would say this is definitely a glass half full scenario. It sucks that you are for sure going to lost your job, but you've got some time to maneuver, and it has got to be comforting to at least have a firm date attached to it now. Start building up your emergency fund if you haven't already, and just be happy that your time working for a company that is disinterested in your personal success is soon to be over. Moving to Dallas may not be a bad move for you, as there are plenty of IT jobs listed in my neck of the woods every day. Not a bad place to live either, if you take away the crazy heat/no rain we've had lately.

    Now that you have a hard date you have a choice to make. Do you spend the next 8 months working there and take your severance, or do you find another job right now and move on. When Hilton laid all of us off about half the staff left for other jobs ahead of time, I stayed and got my severance. This happened November of last year, it took me about 3 months to find something else. Now depending your background I do know for a fact that where I work is looking to hire 2 more. If you decide to go ahead and find something else let me know and I can give you more info.

    My only advice is to take charge of your future yourself, and start looking for opportunities in Dallas right now.

    I would not wait until the hammer drops to start applying, as you would have gone for months and months without looking for better opportunities.

    You can be honest with recruiters and just point them to the news article about your company shutting down, and say that you like the sound of Dallas, TX better than Alpharetta, GA.

    Some of the best opportunities get posted around the end/beginning of the year, due to new budget cycles and projects requiring increased need for bodies.

    As another poster said, try to fill in any gaps in your skillset, as this will make you much more confident in your interviews.

    Just curious, but I'm assuming everyone in your IT dept is looking for a new job? What does your company plan on doing when people starts leaving their position?

    No idea.

    I was trying to spin a positive out of the situation, and I was thinking if the OP (original poster) sticks around through the entire transition, they could put "interstate datacenter migration" on their resume.

    As a prospective employer reviewing your resume, I would like to see that you left on your own terms rather than being laid off.
