Data Centers

I've been looking around trying to find who has data centers located in NC, VA, and MD.
Are data centers typically in the middle of nowhere?
Most of the data centers I'm finding are out in the middle of nowhere it seems.

Forest, NC - Facebooks is building a data center
Maiden, NC - Apple
Lenoir, NC - Google
Reston, VA - Google
Boydton, VA - Microsoft is building a data center

Reston is the only place that isn't in the middle of nowhere...

Hard to say. I'm not from the area -- do these have something to do with all those gov't agencies around there?

Could be something less sinister. Like they goes where the fiber goes. Maybe they got a good deal on land in the middle of no where. You could buy the entire state of Iowa for the price of having a DC in manhattan :)

Nice and up to date too. It no longer shows the Hilton DC in Memphis.

Those guys build their DC's where they get the most tax advantages, lowest power costs, and maximized "free" cooling times. Very simple and smart on their part.

One thing to keep in mind is that the people administering these DCs may not be in the same physical location as the DC. So if you are looking for work you might have to look elsewhere for the actual tech jobs.

Here in the Charleston area Google has a data center. The only jobs I've seen advertised for it are for industrial HVAC techs.
