I forgot to bring my pants to work once when I was in the Army. That didn't go well. I wound up with an Article 15 putting together desks for 3 weeks 18 hours per day as punishment. True story.Climb a mountain, tell no one. -

I like your extra duty better than mine. Shoveling snow and redoing the same 2500 sq ft of tile for 14 days. Nothing like sweeping, mopping waxing and polishing everyday.Currently Studying:

You'll do fine!
Make sure you hang up all your certifications in your 4 square. Don't forgot your associates degree either!

Mike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860well, day one was a success, six weeks is the training schedule, so you know we didn't get too deep into things today...
but the company seems to be a big fan of HDI, so it seems like my HDI cert and membership have paid for themselves, since I'm sure it reflected nicely upon me during the interview...
I know it's only day one, but I really feel like I am going to love this company and this job...
I know N2IT was kidding, but after I get settled in, I may set up my HDI certCurrently Working On

Awesome Mike. If your organization values the HDI cert that much it might not be a bad idea. -

Mike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860six weeks of training, but they say they expect it to take 6 months before an Analyst is ready to really know the system... I don't see it taking me that long.... plus they have a NOC, a data center, and local support, all on site so there is plenty of room for advancement...
I'm going to crank out this MCDST as soon as I get paid, and then it's on to WGUCurrently Working On

Glad to hear things went well. I start my first day on the 17th so I know how it is. 4 weeks of training for me, although from what i've been told it's all proprietary systems, if you don't know your standard networking and hardware stuff you're hosed. Then again they don't hire unless you can pass a few tests first.
Same boat on the advancement as well, they hired for 6 spots, all 6 moved up in the company. Hope everything goes well there for you.WGU BS:IT Completed June 30th 2012.

When I was with the USDA help desk I didn't either. Must be SOP. -

MCDST isn't going to make a difference at this part of the game. Gain 1-2 years experiencing and moving on will help a lot more. Besides you have 5 help desk related certs, 2 more isn't going to help. Infact it might hurt. If someone sees your resume and you have 7 help desk certifications on it, you might pigeon hole yourself into a helpdesk lifer.
I've seen it before.
Learn the job to hell with the certs for now. Get real tangible experience. -

Hitting the KPI's and meshing with the team is what the employer cares about.
After call below minimum requirements
Answering 15+ calls or whatever the threshold is set at.
Closing incidents in the OLA/SLA
Are you showing up on time and leaving on time. Are you staying after and trying to learn more? Are you late for lunches? Are you cherry picking the easy cases and leaving the harder ones.
Those are all > MCDST. -
Mike-Mike Member Posts: 1,860If I had not already read all the MCDST material, I would agree with you two, but at this point (at the risk of sounding cocky) it's just a matter of taking the tests...
after that I will only be doing certs for WGU once I get enrolled...
I'm not sure they care about MCDST, I'm just going to finish it because I started it. But i did tell them in my interview and in my thank you letter that I was going for it, so I think completing it would show follow through. But regardless, at work I'm very professional. Dress slacks, shirt and tie everyday, I ask a ton of questions, and soak up as much knowledge as they will give me. After day one the trainer told me he gave a glowing review to my soon to be manager.
At this point I'm contracting waiting to get picked up perm, so my goal is to impress them as much as possible. And I know at this point meeting all of my metrics is the best way to do that. And obviously learning as much as possible about the job is the best way to meet and exceed those metrics.Currently Working On

Mike, that sounds like a wonderful plan. I think what turgon and N2 are saying though is to soak up the job like a sponge so you can gain that experience. Keep working on the certs, if that's what you want, but focus more on the job. If you feel you're ready for the cert, go for it.
You're gonna be fine...but remember...stay hungry. Always stay hungry...it's the difference between getting direct deposit from and employer or getting the check from UI...(trust me I know...) -
