VSP and VTSP

Sounds GoodSounds Good Member Posts: 403
Hi all,

My employer just signed up to be a VM partner and i've been assigned to complete the 2 certifications; VSP and VTSP.

How hard are these and what material can I study from? How much time should I expect to spend on these certs? (I have 0 VMware experience but have worked with Hyper-V a little)

Thanks for responses

These are basically just watching some webex presentations then taking a quick quiz after you're finished. I don't think they are more than 20 questions each and you can retake as many times as you like.

I'm assuming you're starting out with the Infrastructure Virtualization competency. Here's the time and course lists from VMware:

That formatting didn't come across too well, did it. You can get the requirements by logging into the VMware Partner Central site. This is also where you'll sign up for the webinars.

Assuming you're a relatively technical person, VSP should definitely be straightforward for you. VTSP is more challenging, I know some who were studying for their VCP and they found some of the VTSP learning modules useful.

Those are some pointless "exams" .... I don't even take them seriously - you don't even have to be technical to pass them .. just retake a few times - hell you could even run the videos while taking them ..

    Rubbish ...

(Rant over - just found it was a waste of time)

Oh I know - did the whole lot - just found it pointless that you can have the "course" open while doing the "quiz" - having said that - the 'advanced' one is a nice technical introduction into the whole vSphere world ... but the VSP is a joke really .. just my $0.05 anyway ..

I don't think for one minute that VMware have the intention for the same individuals to hold VSP and VTSP, they're really aimed at people with different job roles.

My last company used to run free VSP training/test days for their reseller partners, and the audience was very much non-technical - as I mentioned in a previous reply on this thread I've trained people who were doing their VTSP as part of their VCP study.

Obviously a lot of this will depend on the size of the partner...

Is it possible to take this without your company being a VMware partner? The corporation that I am attached to is but they distribute email addresses with a different @domain based on what contract you fall under. Also the Army is a big customer and I have an enterprise email (mail.mil) but I cannot find them under the VMware Partner Company search.

Your account will have to be attached to a partner I am afraid.

I just don't see how the Department of Defense is not a partner. The entire search feature is misguided. You should be able to search on your email as opposed to guessing what some manager 3 years ago decided to put on the VMware forms.

Considering the amount of money the DoD has spent with VMware, I find it hard to believe they are not a partner. Thus, my email should work to access the partner program. Going to fire off an email to VMware and see what happens.

Do they sell VMware products/services to others outside the DoD? If not, they're a customer and not a partner.

My mistake, I thought 'partner' meant something different.

Mostly Managed Services / Hosting companies can be partners providing a public cloud. Private clouds, like the DOD will have (Use the stuff for themselves rather than renting stuff out) will have retail / purchased licenses.

Whoever sells the licensing/installation features to the DoD would be the partner. DoD would be the customer. And I imagine as large as the DoD is there are quite a few partner companies selling licensing/services.

VSP is rather easy, VTSP is rather brutal.

Regardless, I wish there was a way I could access the materials and test without being affiliated with a partner.

How come? They're only of any value to a partner and those who work for a partner.

Customers can work towards VCA-DCV, VCP-DCV, and beyond...
