I am curious, what is your employer's policy on employment verification? I just talked to a friend who is evaluating a career move but is worried about his company's practice of not divulging information. Is this a common practice? He's afraid of not getting offers because of this.

Pretty standard in my experience. Really all they do is verify if you were employed and from what date to what date. That's about it, they try to not open themselves up to any potential legal action by talking about the employee. Pretty hard to even find a personal reference at some companies as the policy is management can't even offer personal references to employees or past employees.
