Hey guys,

I am new here and preparing for CCNA exam. I am taking online classes at knowledgenet.com.

It is not going to give me much without a book. I am looking forward to buy one. Could you please refer me any good ones, since there are so many out there.

Any help will be appriciated.

Thanks

    Hi, and welcome,

I don't know what 'currently' is the most popular CCNA book, but Todd Lammle's CCNA guide from Sybex is a very good one. The Cisco press guides are usually pretty good as well. I'm sure you can find some more suggestions in previous posts in this forum.

I use the Cisco Press book. I bought the cisco press 'ccna 1 and 2 companion guide' and as our study is aligned to the cisco academy its is perfect for me. (ISBN: 1587131501)

The sybex book, recommended by 'webmaster', seems fine also as a fellow student uses this one.

My observation is that the cisco press book covers half the cisco curriculum (CCNA 1 and 2) in around the same number of pages as the Sybex book covers the whole of the cisco curriculum (ccan 1 2 3 and 4)

I do admit however that the amount of pages doesn't vouch for the content.

I believe the "CCNA Certification Library (CCNA Self-Study, exam #640-801), Sixth Edition" by Odom covers all 1,2,3 & 4 semesters...

There is a review of this book at Amazon

Im planning on purchasing this book as I think I need a second reference. I currently own Todd Lammles book, which is quite good, but I find there are some aspects that it doesnt quite cover in detail.

The Cisco Press book apparently covers all of the CCNA and splits it up into Intro and ICND components.
Im a newbie.... please be easy on me.

I started studying for my ccna with Todd Lammle's book ccna deluxe edition isbn 0-7821-4314-8. This is one of the best tech book I've ever had. The way he teaches how to subnet is very easy unlike some other books. He seems not to go into detail about things as much as I would have liked ie cable specifications and nat for the most part. So once I got done with the book I got ccna self-study sixth edition for cisco press and am read those books. I think if you have to time to read two different ccna books ie todds book and the cisco press books you will have a lot better chance on the exam. Make sure you take good notes as you go along also. Another thing that helped me was getting cisco ccna network simulator from cisco press. It was kinda buggie but it has updates. It lets you use up to 200 devices with frame relay, isdn and you can even telnet into the devices using your telnet client. You can even pick what modules you want to install in the devices! I didn't like todds network simulator, the biggest reason was there was no cat2950. The only thing I wish was in the cisco press network sim was a pc connected to a device with a rolled over cable. It doen't should the IOS being decommpressed but oh well it's just a sim. I think the two most helpful things with the exam with be to take lots of notes will studying and use a simulator to get use to the commands. Good luck!
