there is one software developed by our software house...
that software uses port 1433 ...
this software has been installed on both client pc and server pc... ( server and client side are both running windows 7 os, not server 2008 or 2003 )...
client cannot establish a connection with the server when windows firewall is on... if i turn it off windows firewall then the connection is established....
i have made 2 rules on server pc.. 1 for tcp 1433 .. 1 for udp 1433.. inbound rules .. enabled them .. so that i can turn on firewall and allow connection on these ports... but with windows firewall on and these two rules defined.. the connection is still not established...
then i created one more rule which allows all programs to establish a connection .. then the connection is established... but allowing all programs to establish a connection is same like disabling firewall...
so what can be done that this particular application is allowed to establish connection b/w client and server while windows firewall is on ...

It happened me once - set rule right, checked ports and scopes twenty times and nothing - still blocking. And only then I saw that rule was set only for "domain" profile, and actual profile on connection was set as "work". Ticked right checkbox and all went fine.2013 to do list:
