T1 DSU/CSU WAN Interface Card

steve2012steve2012 Member Posts: 93 ■■□□□□□□□□
I am thinking of ordering 3 2600xm routers for my CCNA lab.

I came accross a couple of T1 DSU/CSU WAN Interface Cards (WIC-1DSU-T1-V2).

Is it possible to put those cards in the routers and simulate a T1 line between the routers?

thanks

steve

Yes you can, you need a t1 crossover cable

    PIN - PIN
    1 - 4
    2 - 5
    4 - 1
    5 - 2

Pins are numbered left to right when you hold the cable end up with the tab away from you

Once you got them connected, on one of the routers issue a service-module t1 clock source internal. And your connection should come up no problem.

    What Millworx said.

Be aware that WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 WICs are one of the cards which have many counterfeits out there. If its a suspiciously low price for what they claim is a brand new card then its most likely fake and you should buy at your own risk. It will most probably be fine for lab usage only but you may end up with a DOA or one that has a very short lifespan.

Yeah, I've seen them as low as $25 on ebay. icon_eek.gif

    Thanks for the heads up

by the way, they are 2610xm routers, is there much difference than the 2600xm's?
and will those cards still work?

Im looking at 3x 2610xm routers and 2x 2950 switches for my lab. is that good enough for CCNA?

    thnx

    A 2610XM is a 2600XM. 2600XM is just referring to the entire 26xxXM range.

    26yzXM:

The y basically is the CPU speed of the 2600XM router. It can be 1, 2 and 5
The z is the number of Ethernet interfaces - 1 that is built into the router. It can be 0 or 1 which gives you 1 and 2 built in FE interfaces respectively.

The CPU speed isn't particularly important in a lab as it just affects routing performance. Pick whatever one is cheapest.

Ideally you get the 26x1XMs which come with 2 FE interfaces but again, get whatever. Its nicer to have 2 FEs built in but not a major deal that it doesn't for most labs.

The WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 will work fine in any 2600XM.

    Yes.

    Thank you tiersten

The routers have v12.2 IOS and 32mb ram. im just concerned that the ram is low and the ios should be 12.4.

    will that affect anything?

    thnx

You should upgrade it to 12.4 if you can. It may require more flash and more RAM.

Run "show version" and look at the System Bootstrap line.

If it says "ROM: System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(8r) [cmong 8r], RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1)" then your 2600XM is capable of taking 128MB SIMMs for a maximum of 256MB RAM. If it is only 12.2(7r) then the maximum is only 128MB in total and you can't use 128MB SIMMs.

The line at the bottom that mentions System flash is how much flash you've got in there. 16MB is built into the motherboard and there is a Flash SIMM socket to add more. The maximum you can have is 48MB.

Insufficient RAM means either IOS doesn't load at all with that version/featureset or if nearly the minimum required then it will load but be unstable. Insufficient flash means you can't keep the IOS file on there and you have to TFTP boot it which can be annoying.

Yes. Some ios's require more memory to run certain features like ips, zbf, nac, etc.. For the purpose of the ccna, don't worry about it. In fact, you could save money by just buying the two switches and use gns3 for the routing. Yes you can connect real hardware to gns3. You can also run sdm on it. Very cool.

You can upgrade to 12.4, in fact i would recommend it as you will have additional functionality that you wont get with 12.2, you wont be able to run 12.4 advanced enterprise or anything as the memory requirements are higher.

That's decent for a lab environment. I guess it really depends on the price and what your comfortable with.

Where do you plan on legally getting the latest ios's? The keyword here is legally.

your really not helping me here.

When using the WIC-1DSU-T1-V2 be sure to set the cable distance. Leaving it default will cause the CSU/DSU to lose sensitivity over a long period of use because the signal attenuation would be so high between a 3ft crossover.
There is no place like 127.0.0.1

What I'm trying to say is, you can only legally get new ios's from Cisco. And you can't just create any guest account and start downloading, you have to have a CCO Account. One way to get a CCO Account is to purchase smartnet for a device but I think that device has to be purchased from Cisco or from a Cisco partner and not something you bought off of ebay, unless someone knows otherwise.
