Work for the last week and a half has been a bit outrageous, but back to normal now.

Finished chapter 2 of BGP design and implementation.

Do the Odom and Boson practices tests everyday now to prepare for the written test in January. You can read obscure books to your hearts content once you have the written out of the way and are working on lab prep.

OK, had a rest, x-mass is over new year tonight, and BGP finished, starting on QOS in the morning.

OK finished CCIE v4 chapters on QOS,
    Classification and marking
    Congestion management and avoidance
    shaping, policing and link fragmentation

today i start on end to end QOS.
I am looking forward to it as QOS would be one of my weakest points, not that its hard it keeping each option separate i find tricky :)
Anyways onwards we go, when i get out the other side of this book things should be a lot clearer.

good on you Sirsamon. have you had a look at Kevin Wallaces 1examamonth website - its pretty good for Qos - when you are reading chapters do you take notes along the way or just read.?

I do take notes on new books.
But i do like to read a book at least twice with time in between reads.
Tthats why Turgon is hammering me to sit the written :)

Today another great day, chapter 5 to 7 completed (gees there is a lot in this books chapters)
This is the first time i have read this book, happy to say i love it.
I find it very clear and in depth also not to mention i love the flow and layout of the book.

    Today's topics were,
    congestion management
    policing and shaping
    congestion avoidance via drop policies

feeling very comfortable with it all, (head ready to burst) got some nice revision notes to keep it clear later.

This morning started a bit flat,

I had red through LFI and FRF last night as i could not sleep :)
So this morning i thought two chapters to go and looking forward to the LAN QOS chapter.
What a let down, the book focused on the 2950s. the last chapter was ok, best prac, which was really a review of everything we had been through.
    All rolled together.

I have to say other than the LAN chapter only on the 2950, i loved the book.

shower time then back to the CCIE book chapter 15 Wide Area Networks, this is a small chapter, but it will lead me onto the Frame relay book.

Good day today, took it easy moving into a new topic.

Covered off HDLC and PPP, then finished the chapter on Frame relay.
Tomorrow i start on the frame relay book :)

As a side note i notice something on the default PPP settings, its not important but does niggle at me :)

I had just setup a basic serial connection. (back to back)

both interfaces were nothing out of the norm,

    encap ppp
    ppp authentication
    ppp quality
    ip address

everything worked but what i did notice,

both ends of the link the queuing would normally be WFQ, not the case with the PPP quality (int command at both ends)
it now had the DCE end with FIFO and the DTE end Weighted Fair.

My question is why ? icon_smile.gif

If its the PPP quality cmd then i would have thought both ends would be FIFO or WFQ but not different at both ends.

    Unless the logic is,

DTE WFQ (customer end) QOS out
DCE FIFO (ISP) return traffic asap

    P.S

you can manually change the Queuing method to WFQ or whatever, just the default i thought was strange.

    icon_smile.gif

just setup a multilink with 4 serial, both ends are FIFO before and after using the PPP Quality cmd.

    hmm.

    anyways all good.

Tonight i am ready to pass out :)

First day back at work, plus i got up at 6:30am to start my new year resolution to exercise.

1 hour on the bike while watching INE vids.

Tonight i started the Frame Relay solution book, only got the first 3 chapters done, never mind onto configuration tomorrow.
Going to be a nice refresher.

Videos on the bike? That is a great idea. Keep up the good work.

Finished of Frame Relay, a lot of chapters are no use at this time, ISDN, X-25.
This time i have to admit it was a long boring read.

It's time to take the written and get it out of the way. Then take your excellent workethic into labprep before you get burned out. Lab prep is harder than reading books.
  • SirsamonSirsamon Member Posts: 221
    Turgon, you are correct.

I finished the Multicast section of CCIE v4 book, security, no more extra book reading.
    three chapters to go.

    P.S

added 4 2821 to the home lab :)
