Hey,
Back in xp I would use net meeting. now with windows 7 out its not that easy.

I desire this so I can help my parents out with there computer problems when there hours away and my wife out if she needs it on the fly. So easy to setup, and what not. Any suggestions?

Schreck

No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

Seconded on LogMeIn - I use it all the time to go back and forth from PC's. So much so that I purchased the "LogMeIn Ignition" app for iPhone. Even supports multiple screens and other features.

On the other hand, with friends, work-colleagues and others, I've actually used Skype's screen-sharing feature several times as a less "invasive" assisting tool. While it doesn't have any control features, I do know that more and more people are using Skype for military or away-at-college relatives, so you could at least "view" their screen in that respect, and walk them through the steps via chat/over the phone (again, if control isn't absolutely necessary).

Teamviewer is where its at. It works on port 80 so no need for firewall rules. It has file transfer built right in to it and has pretty good security settings. I like it a lot more than logmein. Its free for personal use as well. Use it for all my remote needs for fixing peoples computers.

How secure are all these tools when used to connect across the internet?

I use VNC or RDP. If using RDP, I only open the port to my IP address.

I second this. I use this on my mom's computer so that I can assist her with the many issues she gets.

All you have to do is go to that computer and install the client, then it will be available via a web browser to connect to. No need to mess with port forwarding or anything.
Decide what to be and go be it.

I use Teamviewer as well. It's great, plus there's an iphone/ipad app.

The company I work for uses GoToAssist. I have used it a number of times and it seems to do the job quite well. I really like the fact that you can reboot the machine and stay connected to the session. That helps immensely at times.
