Dial-Peer / Destination-Pattern Question...

I purchased a Cisco 3640 off of Ebay that had FXO and FXS ports. It also had the previous owner's configuration and was used in a government environment. I won't say whose router it was - as they left all that information in the configs - but really enjoy looking how they did things.
There were over 70+ dial-peers using pots and voip. Here's my question...
There were multiple dial-peers with the same destination pattern (see below as just one example). The only differences that I could see was the preference command.
In my studies, the 1st destination pattern that matched was the one that was used. I'm a bit confused as to when the others would be used...
When would this type of configuration be used?
Thanks!

It's always fun looking at someone else's config. A couple of my 2811s came with some pretty sensitive info "backed up" in plain text in flash (even though the running configs were wiped).CCNP:Collaboration, CCNP:R&S, CCNA:S, CCNA:V, CCNA, CCENT -

Don't worry Data; I'll never forget you
