Hi guys,

I just got my free exam code from Dreamspark

It will only allow me to take 72-640 is it the same as 70-640?

I'm working towards my MCITP:EA this year.

Thanks,
Nick

Same test just a different price. Also some MS exams aren't available as 72-xxx codes. All the MCITP:EA tests are the same and your cert still counts the same.
No longer work in IT. Play around with stuff sometimes still and fix stuff for friends and relatives.

So even if I have a mix of 72's and 70's eg 72-640 and 70-642 it will count towards EA ? sorry about the noob questions

Yupp it will. The codes are there to distinguish between the type of exam if you will.

The 70-xxx are the normal exams for everyone
The 72-xxx are the student exams (ones that you need an edu address for)
The 71-xxx are the beta exams (free exams so MS can trial the test)

    and so on...
    NSX, NSX, more NSX..

Hello people, sorry for hijacking this thread. Just failed 72-640 twice icon_sad.gif Thought will be fine without ****. Anyway is it legal to take 70-640 instead, as I need it for my job before February. Thanks, Dauren.

You can take the 70-642. Make sure you stay away from the ****, though. It would suck to go through all that work and if you were caught cheating, to have your certs revoked and be barred from taking more certs.

Well said. Study hard and you will prevail.

Is there a limit on how many times the student version can be taken? I believe both exams are the same between the 70-xxx & 72-xxx in terms of difficulty, number of questions . . .

Could the retake policy be avoided by changing the version (student vs normal)?

I'm confused why somebody would want to spend more money for taking the same exam.

I agree, was constrained in time and now having 600 and 650, guess it was 2-3 questions on CA's. Employee thinks it is possible for networking guy to learn AD in 1 month. /rant Thanks for reply. PS. Hope 72-642 will be easier.

KeithC it is matter of keeping the job, as our company very Microsoftcentric everyone have to pass AD and NI configuring.

My question exactly, I was wondering if I won't be breaking retake policy.

The retake policy for Microsoft doesn't distinguish a difference between student and normal version exams. I would call the MCP service center to ask this question. I don't think you would get in trouble with Microsoft, I would guess you should not be able to take the 70-640 until two weeks after your 72-640 second attempt. Like Psoasman said maybe switch to the 72-642 but the month is almost over. icon_study.gif Good Luck

Are one set of exams a little easier than the others? If you take all 72-xxx exams, are you still MCITP certified, or is there an asterik by that certification? Never heard of these different variations of the tests. Thanks!

Let's settle this. 70-xxx and 72-xxx exams are absolutely the SAME thing content wise. Only difference is reduced price. One will be just as easy or hard as its counterpart. Straight from the horse's mouth:
    Q. What is the difference between Microsoft Certification exams that have a 70 or 72 prefix?

    A. The numbers 70 and 72 refer to the prefix of the exam number. Exams that have the same number but different prefixes (one has a 70 and the other has a 72 prefix) have exactly the same content. The only difference is that the Microsoft Certification exams with the 72 prefix are part of the academic series exams. The academic exams are available at an academic price only to students, faculty, and employees of accredited high schools and post-secondary schools.

If you fail one you most likely will fail the other one. Switching series is not a solution for not understanding the material and dominating the objectives. I suggest analyzing the results sheet and hitting hard the areas were you scored low.

I'm pretty sure the content of the exams are the same...HOWEVER, as someone who's taken both 73 and 70 exams, I can tell you that when I took the 70-647, the amount of questions were longer (76 questions) as opposed to the 50 I had always seen for the 73 exams. (IT Academy)

HOWEVER, I do not dispute that the content on the exams are the same...but I did get more questions on the regular exam. (Also got a higher score...647 was the only exam I ever got that was in the 800 range.)
