Todd Lammle 6th edition

Hello Everyone,
I just recently picked up Mr. Lammle's CCNA Study guide off of Amazon and noticed it is the 6th edition. After reading through the forums it seems as though a 7th edition has just been released. My question is, should I return my 6th edition for the 7th edition or do you think the 6th edition will suffice for my studies?

just buy icnd1 and icnd2 cisco press wendell odom book with todd lammle book as second source because it is very easy to understand

dont depend on only todd lammle

I would get the new version. It looks like he's added some labs and the most up-to-date information. The Cisco press books have good information as well, either or will do. You may want to invest in a cheap router off ebay to practice the CLI.

I can second what ccnaomkar says. The Lammle book is a bit easier to understand than Odom's books, but I would not depend on it alone. Get the Cisco Press book too. Use some practice exams, such as the one's on this site, and read through the books. You should be well-prepared to pass the exam. Good luck!

Thanks again for the input, I do appreciate the responses. I wasn't sure about doing this self study, but seeing I don't have the bank to **** on the classes, I realize if I want this cert, I'm going to have to use the same method I did for my CompTIA certs... I also realize this is a TOTALLY different animal but after reading some of the posts on this site with regards to self study for the CCNA, I do feel a bit better about it.

I used both Odoms and Lammle's books and self studied and got the qualification in the end. Also you need a good emulator for your labbing. Id recommend packet tracer.

You think an emulator would be sufficient, or should I invest in building a lab?

If you have the money, by all means build a lab. If not, then try to get a network simulator to practice on. Packet Tracer is great.

I didn't have a lab when I was studying for the exams, and I still passed, but I think you will be better off in the "real world" if you have some hands-on experience with actual Cisco routers and switches. I used Packet Tracer to study for the sims, but my boss at the time let me take home a few used Cisco switches to practice on, so I at least got to practice the switch labs on real equipment. Search eBay for some deals on used Cisco gear. Good luck on the exams!

Don't psych yourself out about it!! People have learned much MUCH more difficult things.

As they said - with the books, either an emulator/a few pieces of equipment, and some time dedicated you'll be all set man!

An emulator like PacketTracer or GNS3 would be sufficient for ICND1, but for the overall experience I'm building my own lab. It can be done extremely well for $400 or so, cheaper for less features, but anyway you go a small investment for a huge return.

Rob, thank you for writing. I get a lot of these same questions on my forum as well, and it is understandable.

My 6th edition is now 3 years old, so my latest 7th edition is updated to the latest exam objectives, and written around the new CCNA courses that Cisco released a few months back.

In addition to the refresh of the book, I removed old material so the book has a few less pages, but this has to do with moving a 100 page glossary to the CD, so all appendix is no longer in the book, but on the CD.
By removing subjects like SDM from the book, etc, the book is now 700 pages instead of 1000. Makes the book look less daunting!

So, more info on the CD, but I also added a new Exam Sim Practice exam on the CD, besides all the updated questions and flash cards. The Sim exam has 15 different layouts all created in Packet Tracer. These help you prepare for the actual CCNA exam sims (but are not the same of course).
Packet Tracer, for obvious reasons, is not included in the book or anywhere on my web sites. However, I provide all the .pkt files for every lab in my book, and for the 15 Sim Practice Exams.

Although I used real equipment to write all new labs with my latest book, I also used Packet Tracer for every lab as well, which assured me that anyone with Packet Tracer can read my book and do all the hands-on labs - with the included lab layouts.

So, in a nut shell: latest, updated material, all new written labs, review quesitons, bonus questions, and flash cards. More CD material, less objective filler info in the text to make the book easier to read and be more a "CCNA Study Guide", and lastly, my CCNA Simulation Exam Practice Exam.

Thanks for taking the time to jump in here and clarify. Had I actually waited a week or two and not been so eager to jump into this, I probably would have ended up with the 7th ed. and not the 6th. Again, like everyone else, thanks for taking the time to address my questions and offer your input.

There has not been an announcement from Cisco. And I really doubt that they schedule their exam changes around Todd Lammle's book releases.

Even IF they do make a change, it will not take effect immediately after announcement. There is typically a time frame when the old test is still valid. You really shouldn't worry about that at all.

Haha, I WISH Cisco did their changes around my books! Wouldn't that be nice...

Again, although I used real equipment, I created labs with Packet Tracer and those files are available to anyone who buys my book.

In addition, please be aware that Sybex stopped putting the PDF of the book on the CD (for all their books).So, if you want the Kindle version, make sure you buy that. You no longer get both types of media with one book. Please don't shoot the messenger here, I just write the books, I don't own them - that is a common misconception!

I created 15 different labs, both configuration and troubleshooting labs, and all the packet tracer files I used to create the labs are avialable as well. That was my favorite chapter to write. Email me with your reciept and I'll send it to you asap.

I wrote my new CCNA 7th Edition to write to the new Objectives that Cisco has published only in their official course corriculm. Since I am a CCSI, I went through both the ICND1/ICND2 courses online.

Based on that new information, I updated my book. My book covers all the latest information for the exam objectives.

I bought your 6th Ed a couple of years ago and read it before Odom's. It was a lovely intro to the tech and commands and made Odom's books a lot more manageable.
I also loved the sims you had in it (Boson); they were a great help for my exam. If your new chapter is anything like the sims you had before, they'll be of great help to your students/readers.

Todd, two questions.
First up, are you going to give us a book for the new CCNP course?
Secondly, how do you pronounce your surname?

I am working on a CCNP Wireless book. Why? Because wireless is my bag, baby!

The CCNP R/S is just too hard to write for, and the exams change too much and too quickly to create any physical book. It would be completely obsolete before I even finished the book. Just look at the Cisco Press books - worthless for the exams...good info, but you're not going to get close to passing the exam(s). That's a personal opinion, and I understand a few people might feel differently, good for them.

And yes, Sybex wouldn't even give me an e-copy of my own book! I bought one for my iPad Kindle app because I travel a lot and when people post on my forum I need to be able to quickly search for what they are asking about....but you're right - you'd think I'd get a free e-book! I even paid $39.95 for it!! They have since lowered the price to $18....amazon is so crazy sometimes...

As a side question - I've just bought the 7th edition. Is it possible to pick out the topics for ICND1 and just read them or does they way the book is written make that impossible?

Huw, it is absolutely possible.
I wrote the book to cover the latest objectives and information for all three exams: ICND1/ICND2/CCNA Composite. The reason that this wasn't harder than writing two books is that there is a lot of overlapping information on both the ICND1 and ICND2 exams.

For the ICND1 exam, study these chapters:
1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16

For ICND2 exam, study these chapters (assuming you've passed ICND1):
5, 6, 7, 9, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16

For CCNA composite, obviously all chapters.

If you study the book, go through all the written labs and review questions, then hit the CD and go through the bonus exams and flash cards, you'll really have your foundation down! Since it is impossible to do exam crams or write questions that are "on" the exam (since they are constantly changed), you must build a strong foundation.

After your strong foundation is in place, you must get hands-on experience - and a lot of it. During your studies, after your studies - as much as possible. Packet Tracer is a good software program that can do everything on the CCNA objectives. I have hands-on labs during each chapter and at the end of each chapter. Also, I have more labs on the CD of the book.
