Quick Question on Connecting Switches

FuturaFutura Member Posts: 191
As a rule should switches connected to each other always be set up to trunk?

And would you ever connect two switches together and set them not to trunk?

Many Thanks

There isn't really a rule, but most of the time I'd use a trunk. If you only want one VLAN then manually prune the rest. That way you can add/remove VLANs later if needed without changing the mode and disrupting traffic.

Ports default to "dynamic desirable" so by default two switches plugged in to each other trunk! :)

In all seriousness, I always try to tell my students the IOS is like a swiss army knife. There are best practices to follow but every config is designed to meet the needs of YOUR business. Your security policy may say no to trunking, you may not prune per standards or may have a very specific need to only connect two switches via access ports.

For the most part if you're in the field and see two switches connected they will be trunked followed by a vlan allowed list and vtp pruning enabled.
