Color Blindness

I was wondering if anyone had their color blindness give them any problems getting a job, particularly in the govt/state/county/etc sector.

I have a form of color blindness, although it had not hampered me in any way for the past 6+ years being in the IT field.

I'm color blind also, so much for being a fighter pilot icon_cry.gif I don't see how it would effect IT though.

Partially color blind here too. In the 9 years I've been in IT it hasn't been an issue. It might take me a few extra seconds to distinguish colors putting on a Cat5 end or something, but nothing major.

While it hasn't prevented me from getting a job...it does hinder me from doing certain things. I can't tell the difference in the color lights on the switches servers (unless they are Dell because they use blue / red instead of green / red).

    I also can't make Cat5 cables.

I could also never get a job as a graphic design artist or web designer. Nothing major though....

I found I was extremely limited in job choices with the Air Force. My ASVAP scores qualified me for any electronics job in the book but failing the color vision test wiped all of those options off the table so instead of working with computers, I loaded planes.

However, I have not found this too limiting in the civilian sector. I do run into issues with identifying blinking lights but for the most part my job is pretty much black and white (I use CLI a lot ;P ).

Yeah, if your color blind or have poor depth perception your pretty much disqualified from any electronic job in any branch of the service.

I have colour blindness. Fighter pilot, TV cameraman, bomb disposal prohibitive. 'Cut the red wire, R.E.D, RED! No problems in IT.

Ditto. The military excluded me from a lot of good jobs but in the civilian sector, especially IT I've not had a problem. I can make Cat 5 cables, terminate 25 pair amphenol cables and even see the colored LED's on the switches. But I'll be damned if I can pass a color vision test.

So much for getting my PPL. lol.

As long as no one tries to break into your data center wearing red and green outfits, you should be fine. :)

I had a physical exam the day I originally posted this. When they busted out with the Ishihara slides I started freaking out a bit because I know I'm colorblind. I couldn't get more than half the numbers. Then right after this test, they took my blood pressure and I was almost in a pre-hypertension state lol. 135/70?

When I had orientation for my Cisco NetAcad class, one of the powerpoint slides stated if youre colorblind, Cisco is not a field to be into.

But everything is cool, I was notified a week later that my physical and other pre-employment checks got approved. I start next week!!
