Dream Job?

djfunzdjfunz Member Posts: 307
I would like to pose a question that I've been recently pondering. If one had the perfect opportunity to work anywhere they'd like as a system administrator where would that be? A shorter question would be better phrased: What company would be your dream job? A great resume addition, good pay and a excellent place to gain experience. The latter being the most important bullet point in my honest opinion.

    millworx,
if you are reading this, I wish to be you.

he's a user from here. He recently became a Network Engineer at Cisco.

now thats a dream job. For a sys admin, I would say a job at Microsoft.
i guess a job at any of the large tech companies would be amazing.

I personally don't care a whit where I am, as long as I get to do interesting things.

This question makes me a sad panda (southpark reference). If you are qualified you can probably get your dream job - if not right now, then within the next few years if you work at it....if you are willing/able to move. If you are restricted on where you can locate to this reduces your shot by a bit.

For now my dream job would be network technician, eventually moving up to a senior network design role after several years of hard work. I don't care what company, as long as I'm treated like a human being.

In principle that makes sense however if one is doing interesting things once a month then it's not a good use of ones time. If one is doing interesting things and not getting financial compensation for these things, practically speaking this is also not the "dream" job I'm referring to.

No need to be sad ehnde. One is allowed to aspire and work for that "dream" job. Relocation is obviously an important factor in more realistically attaining ones dreams.

Stability also seems to be a great deciding factor in building this list. My short list would be as follows.

    HP
    IBM
    Dell
    Microsoft
    Cisco
    Intel
    Google

I really want to work for USCYBERCOM. My interests and goals all revolve around cybersecurity, information assurance, etc... With the amount of tech those guys get to play with, and a really important mission... it's hard for me to think of a more interesting place to work.

Me too. I'm very happy with what I'm doing. It straddles the chasm abyss between developer and sys admin so I am never bored.

I have to say I landed my dream job about 6 months ago. I work for Juniper Networks and develop the courseware that goes into student and lab guides. Just recently finished off the Advanced JSEC courseware.

The pay is great, amazing stock options and bonuses, good people to work with, and it's 100% work from home. And I'm learning tons everyday.

I was recently asked if I was interested in taking a proctor position inside of Juniper, but I turned it down. I'm really enjoying what I do and the proctor job was about 50% travel.

A system admin or Help Desk support technician at a nonprofit organization. I have volunteered at a few nonprofits using my IT skills and I always get a good feeling knowing that I could help out. Getting paid to help a nonprofit meet their IT needs would make my day and job very fulfilling.

I'm currently in one of my dream companies right now and it's non-profit. Working at ALSAC/St. Jude here in Memphis. Not in my dream position as I'm only in the help desk right now, but definitely looking forward to working my way up the company chain.

    Beer taster.
I've been a games tester already, and that was a great time. Wonderful teams and coworkers, lovely atmosphere, great times.

Ok, I guess I could settle for teaching. The subjects and students? Anything I'm good at, and anyone who's interested.

If you don't need to be paid well, my last job recently started branching into beer, and if their beer systems are anything like their soft drink systems, they often did company-wide taste tests ....

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a dream job for me, I just want to always be pushing myself to do better, and be better, and hopefully not get stuck into a situation where I hit a "ceiling" and cannot advance.

I have also found my dream job as of the past few years. I've been here a month and have totally redesigned and rebuilt the VMware infrastructure and they force you to do CPE so I will likely get the VCP class. I also get to work with any technology I want. There are IT Consultants in one wing and business professionals in the other so there's always something new and interesting.

I think the next rung on the dream job latter would have to revolve around landing a job at VMware. It's such a great technology that I wish I could get everyone in the world using it.

That was a great read, and I can definitely agree that that would be an amazing experience to do work like that (as long as you're experienced enough to make sure your driver stays alive :)). New dream job for me found? Quite possibly!

My dream job is to be a part time college professor during both my working years, and retirement when I'm 50+. It is my hope that I can do and finish my Masters within 4-5 years from now to make that possible. :)

Alternatively, I'd settle for being a librarian in retirement. (Another cake job...) Both of those would be "second career" moves so my mind doesn't lay in atrophy. I'm trying to see management in my first career. :D I would have to leave NJ to do either though, so that I can receive the pension check and a nice to decent salary.

VMware is an interesting idea. The technology is used so often and there are many different variations. They seem on top of their game. I like it! :)

Full time test driver at the Nurburgring. Not a computer in sight - just a lot of new, fast motors that need hammering and (several) oil tankers.

I have a enjoyable and varied job which I like very much and there is always something new and exciting to do, but sometimes the pressure of being handed a 'lemon' or a 'hot brick' and having to sort it out, being told you need to be across the country the next day with minimal notice and the endless streams of 'paperwork' sometimes takes it toll.

    I honestly agree with you.

I've come to a point in my life where I had "dream jobs" that have no possibility of "dream pay" and no possibility of promotions.

My only REAL dream job is to found or co-found a successful company.
